Drumline - Brian Cherry

Hey Cowboys Nation,

I am thrilled to be back for my second season on the snare line of the DCR&B Drumline! We have an incredible line put together this year with fantastic talent from top to bottom.

While percussion has been my passion for many years, my 9-to-5 is a bit different! I am a Therapeutic Optometrist and Glaucoma Specialist here in DFW. I received my BS in Biology with a minor in Chemistry fromTexas Tech University and my doctorate of Optometry from the University of Houston.  I enjoy traveling and also play in a band with fellow DCR&B member, Dirk Ellerd!

I’m looking forward to another great year of clean beats and Cowboy victories and I hope to see you at the games!

Number of years on the team:  This fall marks the beginning of my 2nd year with DCR&B.

Prior Experience: My experience in marching percussion began over 15 years ago but I have since participated in Drum Corps International, Winter Guard International, and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. In 2002 I won a DCI World Championship. My teaching experience ranges from middle school to collegiate level ensembles and drum corps.

Hometown:  I was born and raised in Benbrook, Texas.

Nicknames:  I don’t really have many nicknames, though a lot of people call me “Doc.” (Not terribly inventive I admit)

I am a musician because:  Music has always been a part of my life. It has been a way to challenge, express, and push myself for many years!

What do I like to do most besides drumming is:  I have many hobbies! Recently I have been working hard on grilling recipes. Charcoal and I are becoming very familiar.

I’ve always wanted to:  I have always wanted to travel more. Life has its demands, and finances can be limiting, but I have always had a desire to get away and explore.

Advice to Youngsters: This world seems to be changing more by the day, but there are a few things that never go out of style. It may sound cliché, but if your work ethic is good, and your attitude is right, you usually end up ok.

My biggest role model is:  I have had many role models through the years, personal, professional, musical, etc. but I would have to say my mother and father are the most important.  I owe any shred of success to them and their love and devotion to my achievement and happiness.

What I enjoy most about being a DCRB Drummer is:  I love the people. That’s all there is to it. You can play drums by yourself, but when you get a special group of people together, it really is deeply fulfilling.

Favorite Cowboys player past or present:  I am going to mix it up and say my favorite Cowboy was Cliff Harris. If you youngsters aren’t familiar, look him up!  He played corner back in the ‘70s and he absolutely hit like a truck. When he lowered his shoulder, he could have put a sizable dent in a boxcar. I’m only half kidding.

Favorite Band:  I have to flaunt my metal roots here and say Metallica. But, boy, I love my Pantera!

The three guests I would invite to my fantasy dinner party are:  Gosh, I have to go a bit obscure on this answer as well. The 3 people I would invite to my fantasy dinner party would be George Patton, Henry Ford, and Bob Knight.
