For three months, the Giants looked poised for a second consecutive Super Bowl run. Then on Nov. 28, 2008, wide receiver Plaxico Burress accidently shot himself in the right thigh and landed on the team's reserve/non-football injury list for the rest of the season. New York still earned the NFC's top playoff seed but was upset by Philadelphia in the divisional round. Burress was waived in the off-season.
The Giants hope their first-round pick, Hakeem Nicks, can replace some of Burress' production. But head coach Tom Coughlin will again rely on the run and his daunting defense. The Giants were the only team to average five yards per carry for the season.
The Cowboys and Giants split the '08 season series, but aside from the customary pregame trash talk, there's still bad blood between the two teams dating back to the Giants' 2007 divisional-round upset at Texas Stadium.

| 2009 Headliners: |
QB Eli Manning - Has proven to be an upper-echelon quarterback. Strong running game helps, but Burress made his job much easier. |
RB Brandon Jacobs - One of two 1,000-yard rushers on the roster, Jacobs combines deceptive speed and agility with a linebacker's frame. |
DE Justin Tuck - One of many physical, imposing players on the Giants' defense. Has a non-stop motor much like the Cowboys' Pro Bowl nose tackle, Jay Ratliff. |
