| Last year the Saints were the NFL equivalent of the Phoenix Suns - all offense, no defense. All that offense almost got quarterback Drew Brees the single-season passing yards record, but no defense landed the team at last place in the NFC South. So, when the draft rolled around, they didn't take any offensive personnel with their four picks. Instead, they took two defensive backs, a linebacker and a punter. When the Cowboys face off against the Saints in 2009, they can only hope the defense hasn't made much improvement and that the offense has an off day, because Dallas hasn't bested New Orleans since 1994. |
| 2009 Headliners: |
QB Drew Brees - After passing for 5,069 yards last season, Brees is once again the favorite to lead the league in passing yards in 2009. If his receiving weapons - tight end Jeremy Shockey and wide receivers Robert Meachem, Lance Moore and Marques Colston - can stay healthy, Brees' numbers could be even more spectacular than before. In any case, the Cowboys secondary will be kept on its toes. |
RB Reggie Bush - Entering his fourth NFL season, Bush is still fighting the perception that he'll never be an every-down back. The departure of Deuce McAllister will give Bush more touches, but now he also has to contend with Pierre Thomas for carries. Bush can be a home-run hitter every time he touches the ball, but no one knows how often that will be. |
CB Malcolm Jenkins - Jenkins heard it all going through the draft process: he's one of the best defensive backs in the draft, but he's too slow to play corner. Whether the Saints feel that way remains to be seen, but there is some chatter of moving Jenkins to safety despite his success at corner at the collegiate level. If he does move to safety, though, he'll have a wonderful mentor in the newly arrived Darren Sharper. |
