| The 49ers answered one of their two big off-season questions when they decided to lift the interim tag off of Mike Singletary, who took over midway through last year as head coach. Singletary returns to the sideline for his first full season, but now has to figure out who will start at quarterback. His options will be last year's starter Shaun Hill or Alex Smith, the former No. 1 overall pick who has battled injuries the last two years.

| 2009 Headliners: |
RB Frank Gore - Has the tools to be one of the NFL's best running backs. Since his 1,695-yard season in 2006, Gore has seen his stats decrease but he's still rushed for more than 1,000 yards the past three seasons. A better passing game should limit the eight-man fronts in Gore's face. |
LB Patrick Willis - Arguably the best young linebacker in the NFL. Willis came into the league as a top-notch defender and nothing has changed. Willis is a tackle-machine who has made the Pro Bowl each of his first two years and was an All-Pro pick in 2008. |
WR Michael Crabtree - A highly-productive college receiver, Crabtree is trying to shed the label of just a "system receiver." Once considered a top-three draft pick, Crabtree fell to the 49ers with the 10th pick. Crabtree has missed the summer with a foot injury that ultimately hurt his draft stock. But the 49ers have been lacking a big-play receiver. |
