UConn’s Moore Looks Like A Pass Rusher As Mid-Round OLB Pick
Name: Sio Moore
Age: 22 (born May 2, 1990)
Honors: Moore was a first-team All-Big East linebacker, and he was invited to both the East-West Shrine Game as well as the Senior Bowl.
Key Stat: Though he started 10 games at outside linebacker, Moore showed an uncanny ability to wreak havoc in the backfield – much like fellow draft prospect Jarvis Jones of Georgia. Moore finished second on his team with eight sacks, and he led the Huskies with 15.5 tackles for loss.
Where He’s Headed: Moore’s height may hurt his stock slightly, but his NFL Combine numbers were impressive: 38-inch vertical to go with 29 bench press reps. The prevalent opinion has Moore going somewhere between the second and third rounds, behind the likes of Oregon’s Dion Jordan and LSU’s Barkevious Mingo, but still one of the first few outside linebackers taken.
How He Helps the Cowboys: There’s definitely an idea of what the Cowboys’ linebacker corps will look like in Monte Kiffin’s 4-3 scheme, but there’s no guarantees outside of Sean Lee and Bruce Carter earning spots. Moore could compete with three or four others for that last starting position. If he maintains his collegiate penchant for sacking quarterbacks, he could be a valuable asset to the new-look defensive line on passing downs.
Scout’s Take: Plays as a Sam linebacker in this scheme. … Some quickness off the edge. … Will fight the block at the point of attack. … Had a nice sack in the North Carolina State game where he showed a good burst to and through the hole. … Plays the low block with his hands. … Can swim the blocker and work down the line. … Showed the ability to cover in the slot. … In good position on his coverage. … Does a good job of avoiding blocks. … Can extend with his hands. … Can squeeze the hole. … Shows some power when he comes on the blitz. … Can work through some tight spaces. … In the Rutgers game, really chased from the backside. … Is really at his best when he can run. … Awareness to position himself for the screen. … Really flattens down the line. … Is a physical tackler. … When he gets there he will wrap up and get
his man on the ground. … Has been a linebacker that has played several different positions at UConn. … Interesting player because of how he gets to the ball and what he does at the point. … Might be one of those guys you draft and from the word “Go” he is in the mix. -- Bryan Broaddus Read
