Injury To Rookie LB Magee Further Complicates Position
IRVING, Texas – Rookie linebacker Brandon Magee was held out of practice Tuesday after he suffered a concussion during Monday’s practice.
The news is another blow to the Cowboys’ linebacker corps, which just lost Alex Albright for the season due to a back injury.
Magee has been in contention for the backup middle linebacker spot since coming to training camp as an undrafted free agent. The injury to Albright gives Magee a better opportunity to secure a roster spot, though it remains to be seen how long the concussion will sideline him.
Fellow linebacker Caleb McSurdy has gotten the lion’s share of the second-string reps at middle linebacker since Magee’s injury. Fellow rookies Cameron Lawrence and Taylor Reed are bound to see increased playing time while Magee recovers.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Monday that it was premature to discuss the possibilities of deciding roster spots. But he acknowledged the role of injuries, such as Albright’s in determining the final 53-man selection.
“There’s a lot of competition at each position,” Garrett said. “And then you start having competition among the positions. Right? You start saying this ‘Ok, this sixth guy here or that seventh guy there or the 10th guy here, the fourth guy here.’ You start saying, ‘Who helps our team most?’”
