QB Moore Expected To Miss Significant Time After Suffering Broken Leg

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys' backup quarterback position is now very much unclear once again after Kellen Moore suffered a left broken ankle injury late in Tuesday's practice.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed the injury as he walked off the practice fields, although he didn't have a specific timetable for Moore's recovery, although it's possible he could miss the entire season.

Moore was rolled up on by a defender during team drills and had to be carted off the field with his leg in an air cast.

Moore, who started the final two games of the 2015 season, has yet to win a game in the NFL but did pass for 435 yards in the season finale against Washington, becoming just the fifth player in franchise history to top 400 yards.

"Your heart hurts for him because he just works really hard," tight end Jason Witten said of Moore. "He's constantly taking notes, he's studying, he's communicating. And at that position, I've seen it with Tony for a long time as we came in. You never know when your break is going to happen. He'll continue to fight. That's who he's been his whole life. He'll bounce back, I'm sure."

While the team is certainly hoping for a healthy Tony Romo in 2016, he played in just four games last season, but finished only two. Behind him now are a couple of unproven youngsters in rookie fourth-round pick Dak Prescott and first-year pro Jameill Showers, who spent all of last year on the practice squad.

Jones declined speculate what the Cowboys will do to address the latest setback. In the team's opening press conference of training camp last Friday, Jones made a point to dismiss the notion of adding recently-cut Nike Foles, who has played for the Eagles and Rams.
