Mailbag: Carrying Only Two QBs? Special Teams Standouts?
COCONUT CREEK, FL
If Dak continues to impress and the organization is really comfortable with him being the clear No. 2 QB, do you think that they may take a chance and only keep two quarterbacks, or is that too big of a risk?
David: Assuming Prescott continues to play well, this is exactly what I expect to happen. Think about it for a second: the original intention was to keep three quarterbacks – Kellen Moore as a backup and Prescott as a developmental guy. If Prescott plays well enough to be the backup, then the Cowboys don’t really need to worry about a developmental guy for the time being. I’m fairly confident they can sneak Jameill Showers onto the practice squad – or find a capable replacement for him if he leaves.
Rob: If they’re comfortable enough with Prescott as the No. 2 quarterback, then yes, I could see that as a possibility. It would give them room to keep an extra running back or wide receiver or lineman. They did it last year, keeping only Brandon Weeden as the backup behind Tony Romo. It wasn’t until Romo got hurt in Week 3 that they brought Matt Cassel aboard. The injury situation across the roster by the end of preseason could influence their thinking, too.
ST. THOMAS V.I., VI
Looking at the first two preseason games, a couple of names seem to keep turning up around the ball, but I haven't heard you guys say much about them: James Morris and Jeremiah McKinnon. Am I mistaken in thinking these two are making a case for a spot on the 53 with their game play and special teams contributions?
David: People love to talk about the two-deep, but every NFL team needs a handful of really good special teams players. As fate would have it, the Cowboys are currently missing one of their core special teamers in James Hanna. That can only help guys like Morris and McKinnon, who are both having great camps. I don’t know if that’s going to be enough to help them make the team, but at the very least I love their chances to make the practice squad.
Rob: You’re not mistaken, though the roster numbers aren’t really in their favor. McKinnon followed up his interception against the Rams with a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a special teams stop against the Dolphins. Morris plays with a high motor and he’s also contributing on special teams. Depending on how much more time Andrew Gachkar misses with his broken thumb, the team could start the season with an extra linebacker.Read
