Mailbag: Signing Leary Long-Term? Starting Romo In A Meaningless Game?
I believe the O-Line is the core of this team and would very much like to see it stay together for many more years. I can only assume the Cowboys will get Zack Martin locked up in the near future with a nice contract. What about Ron Leary? Hasn't Leary played well enough this year to at least receive a contract offer from the Cowboys? And why not try and lock him up before he hits the open market this spring?
Bryan: I agree with you about Ronald Leary and the way that he has played. I also agree with you about signing Zack Martin long-term, but I don’t see that with Leary -- especially with La’el Collins waiting. They had a chance to re-sign Leary in the offseason to a deal and they didn’t do it -- that tells me all that I needed to know about that situation. They are going to ride this out with Leary and work with Collins next season.
David: These are the limitations of the salary cap era. The Cowboys are likely going to be paying top dollar to Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin. Can they really afford to give another big-money contract to Ron Leary? I doubt it. Not with La’el Collins as a younger and cheaper option. Leary has been drastically underpaid since 2014, and he’s going to want to maximize his value this spring. I don’t blame him one bit, and I don’t think the Cowboys do either.
I know this may be way too early to ask, but I’m going to do it. It’s sports talk, and I haven't heard anyone ask. If the Cowboys are sitting at 13-1 and have home field locked up, does Tony Romo start? Does Zeke sit? Based on the remaining schedules for the division leaders and the Giants it is not out of the realm of possibility.
Bryan: If that game means nothing – I sit them all. I will remind you that Dallas played a game in Washington that meant nothing in 2014 and Garrett played Romo, Murray and Bryant well into the fourth quarter so I have a feeling that he might do the same given the opportunity.
David: If the Cowboys have the No. 1 seed locked up, I would probably treat the final games like preseason games – Dak gets a quarter, Romo gets a quarter, Sanchez gets the second half. Same goes for the rest of the starters. You don’t want guys to get rusty, but there’s also no need to subject them to 60 minutes of risk. I’ve heard people argue that it would be disrespectful to start Romo in a meaningless game, but I’m not buying it. If I’m trying to figure out what to do with Tony Romo in 2017, I’d love to see what he looks like in live action. That could go a long way in determining his value.Read
