Mailbag: Expectations For Carrell? Higher Ceiling For Awuzie or Lewis?

It sounds like both Awuzie and Lewis can contribute right away in the secondary. Which player do you think has the higher ceiling and which one can make an immediate impact?

Bryan: Scouts love both players and have high hopes for each. Coming out of college I had Lewis a round higher but watching Awuzie in these camps I should have had him on par with him. I not riding the fence so give me Awuzie as the guy that helps the quickest due to the fact that I see him playing more spots now.

Nick: Sounds like you might have two different answers to those questions. Yes, it's still very early in the process. But it seems to me as if Lewis could end up as the better player when it's all said and done. He might be short but he's very skilled and aware. He reminds me a little bit of Scandrick in the way he contests for the ball and at the line of scrimmage. Right now, Awuzie might play a little more and he could end up starting at safety. But this isn't the quarterback position. Having two good ones would be a great thing.

There have been a lot of updates recently on all rookies but I haven't seen a lot on Jordan Carrell? What's up with him and how could he factor into the mix?

Bryan: Joey Ivie has shown up more so I would give him the nod right now for being in the mix. If Carrell makes the practice squad that would be an accomplishment for him.

Nick: Well you're not going to hear a ton about low-round defensive tackles this time of year. It's just difficult for them to truly stand out when they're wearing just shorts and shells. Now, put the pads on and let them rush in the 1-on-1 drills and you'll hear a lot about them. Carrell isn't just fighting for snaps with a veteran rotation of tackles, but he's also behind drafted tackle Joey Ivie. But from what I hear, Carrell is a quick-learning and very bright. If he can use those smarts on the field and win some battles, the reps will come.
