Mailbag: Could Vita Vea Help The D-Line? Squared Away In The Secondary?

TYLER BAEM

FARGO, ND

Do you guys think Dallas takes a long hard look at Vita Vea? He could be a huge help to the poor run defense, but also help Maliek Collins and the LBs. Watching tape on him and he really stands out. Thoughts?

Bryan: He's a nose tackle or one technique in this scheme. It would have to be a switch of how they feel about drafting a position such as that in the first round. Can he help? Absolutel,  but considering what else might be on the board then his value could surely be pushed down.

Rob: Well, Mel Kiper thinks so. He's got Vea at No. 19 to Dallas in a very early mock. Everything you read and hear about Vea, he's extremely athletic for a 340-pound tackle. Rod Marinelli wants each of his linemen to be able to penetrate and get to the quarterback. If he can do that, and if he's available when the Cowboys pick, he might be a fit.

I really love the way these young defensive backs seemed to come together near the end of the season. Do you feel that our secondary is strong enough with this group to allow management to go after more pass rushers and maybe a few more offensive weapons in the draft?

Bryan: I grew up in a program where if you felt good about your current group, go ahead and add another one. They might want to add another corner and move Chidobe Awuzie back to safety where they initially had him. Under your plan, adding a defensive tackle and linebacker would not be a bad idea either, but make sure the right guy is there.

Rob: Like pass rushers, I'll never say a team has enough guys who can cover. Despite being under contract for two more years, Orlando Scandrick sounded unsure about his future with the team near the end of the season. If he and Cowboys did part ways, I'd sure want another DB with experience back there to help the depth.
