With Voluntary Program, Dak & Players Start Toward 2018 Turnaround
FRISCO, Texas – In a Q&A session at his women’s football clinic this past Saturday in Dallas, Dak Prescott said the Cowboys’ goal is “chasing No. 6.”
The objective, of course, is winning the franchise’s sixth world championship – and the third-year quarterback can start the groundwork with his entire team this week as the voluntary offseason workout program commences.
“I’m excited,” Prescott said. “I’m excited to get the whole team in there, and hopefully every guy shows up for these optional workouts.”
The NFL has divided the offseason program into three phases: Read
- Phase One – the first two weeks – permits only strength, conditioning and rehab work with strength and conditioning coaches.
- Phase Two includes three weeks of on-field individual and team work on a “separates” basis, though live-contact offense vs. defense are not permitted.
- Phase Three lasts four weeks and includes up to 10 days of non-live organized team activities (OTAs) set for May 22-24, May 29-31 and June 4-7.
The Cowboys also typically hold a rookie minicamp either the first or second weekend after the draft. Those dates have not been announced yet. The veteran minicamp – the only mandatory portion of the program – is set for June 12-14.
Head coach Jason Garrett has said each year that the voluntary workouts have had near full attendance.
Many new faces will join the program this year. The Cowboys have added several free agents since the new league year began in March, including defensive end Kony Ealy, linebacker Joe Thomas and offensive linemen Cameron Fleming and Marcus Martin.
Last Friday, the Cowboys parted ways with the franchise’s all-time receiving touchdowns leader Dez Bryant after much speculation about Bryant’s contract and future in Dallas. Prescott said Bryant’s release was “sad news.”
“We’ll figure it out,” Prescott said. “As I said, Dez is going to be a hard guy to replace. He’s a talented guy. He’ll be missed.” Read
