Mailbag: How Much Faith Placed In Johnson At Safety?

How much faith is this organization putting in Matt Johnson's ability to stay healthy and be a solid starting safety?

Nick: They’re putting quite a bit of faith that he’ll stay healthy. I’m not sure they are equating that to him being good enough to start. But they obviously like what they’ve seen from him when healthy – however long that was. If he can somehow stay healthy, the Cowboys are convinced he’ll be pretty good. But after last year, they’d be foolish to assume he will be healthy and count on him to start.

Rowan: They had enough faith in him as a potential starting safety in the league to keep him on the 53-man roster for the first portion of the season before eventually getting him on injured reserve. He simply couldn’t stay healthy all year, particularly in regards to his hamstring problems. Obviously, they think when healthy he can be a starter in this league, but he’s yet to translate that to a professional game. So it’ll be a risk and a leap of faith if they go into 2013 thinking he’ll be the starter.

How confident are the Cowboys in their receivers, and should they look to add depth via free agency/draft?

Nick: Fairly confident and yes. I think you always look to add depth at receiver, especially if you’ve got an injury-prone guy in Miles and Dez has been banged up some, too. After that, Harris, Beasley, Coale and Armstrong are all rather small and mostly unproven. If they can get some help, it’d be smart. Maybe even a big guy with some size.

Rowan:They have reason to be confident in Dez, assuming he gets through the offseason unscathed and out of trouble. He should continue to develop as a receiver, and though
he’ll have a new receivers coach in Derek Dooley, not a whole lot has changed offensively. The Cowboys have an adequate third target in the combination of Dwayne Harris and Cole Beasley. The confidence in Miles Austin will depend completely on the player’s health. The team doesn’t have a ton of money to spend or draft picks to waste, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see someone drafted or signed cheap to compete.
