Rookie FA Report: Broaddus Evaluates ASU’s LB Magee

Posted Apr 29, 2013

The Cowboys have had recent success with undrafted rookies, with more than a handful winding up on the roster each of the last two years.

Of course, Tony Romo and Miles Austin are two of the best rookie free agents in both Cowboys history, not to mention the entire NFL.

So you never know when the next hidden gem will surface.

The Cowboys have agreed to terms with more than a dozen rookie free agents. Football analyst Bryan Broaddus has scouted more than 200 players so far in the draft, so here’s his breakdown on some of the top players the Cowboys will sign in the next few days.

Name: Brandon Magee

Position: Linebacker

College: Arizona State

Height/Weight: 5-10/223

Age: 22 (born Oct. 22, 1990)

Strengths: Has some thickness to his body…will attack the hole…warp up tackler…better going straight ahead…reads and goes…physically takes on blockers…works down the line using his hands…can bring his man down…has some pop to him…has a nose for the ball…is a physical player that is always around the ball…outstanding reactions…very effective chasing the ball…plays with awareness…good in zone coverage…will attack crossers….puts himself in position to make plays on the ball…reacts quickly to the pass on the outside…can work through cracks…seen him work through the trash…doesn’t get fooled much…plays with violence….shows up on film…leader…

Weaknesses:  Some stiffness to react on slant in coverage…not much smoothness in his drop…can be a little tight when he as to turn…got caught on the goal line and knocked out of play…over ran tackle in space…will be too aggressive at times and it hurts him…needs to gather and come under better control to make plays at times…doesn’t have ideal height and weight for many schemes but does for this one…workout numbers don’t tell whole story…

Player Comparison:  When I first saw Magee play, I thought he was Dexter Coakley in the way he was always around the ball. Coakley was outstanding in this scheme during his career with the Cowboys. Magee has a nose for the ball just like Coakley who also was an explosive tackler.
