After Being Ruled Doubtful, TE Witten Activated For Opener

Posted Sep 5, 2012

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has been made active for Wednesday’s season opener against the Giants despite suffering a lacerated spleen just over three weeks ago.

Witten will be making his 140th straight appearance, dating back to his rookie season, 2003, when he missed a Week 6 contest against Philadelphia after breaking his jaw. He underwent a CAT scan on Tuesday and was officially listed as doubtful, which is meant to project a near certainty that the player will be out, though he was cleared by doctors.

Witten had been running and catching passes for over a week, but had not engaged in any contact drills.

Nose tackle Jay Ratliff (ankle) was ruled out on Tuesday and will be inactive, and cornerback Mike Jenkins is also inactive following a questionable listing. Jenkins returned to practice on Sunday, but hasn’t engaged in any contact following a reconstructive shoulder surgery on Jan. 2.

Other inactives for the Cowboys include safety Danny McCray (neck), tight end Colin Cochart, offensive lineman David Arkin, outside linebacker Kyle Wilber (thumb) and safety Matt Johnson (hamstring).

Inactive for the Giants are wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan, cornerback Prince Amukamara, running back Da’Rel Scott, guard Mitch Petrus, defensive end Adewale Okomo and tackle James Brewer.
