CB Depth Becoming Factor As Claiborne, Jenkins Have MRIs

Posted Oct 15, 2012

IRVING, Texas – One of the main reasons owner/GM Jerry Jones never flinched on the idea of trading Mike Jenkins back in the offseason was his desire to keep plenty of depth at cornerback.

He said repeatedly that it’s a position that takes its toll with injuries and often referred back to the 2011 opener against the Jets where three cornerbacks were hurt and the Cowboys had to play a cornerback that is no longer in the NFL (Bryan McCann) and a backup safety (Barry Church) to fill in.

That depth might be put to the test here after five games. The Cowboys are awaiting word on a pair of cornerbacks who underwent MRIs on Monday.

Jenkins had an MRI on his left shoulder, the same one that required rotator cuff surgery back in January and kept him out all offseason.

Rookie Morris Claiborne had an MRI on his left knee, which occurred on the touchdown he gave up where he was flagged for pass interference against Torrey Smith although it appeared Smith had shoved him to the ground instead. Claiborne did return to the game in the second half.

The Cowboys still have Brandon Carr and Orlando Scandrick but might need some additional help if Jenkins and/or Claiborne can’t go this week against the Panthers.

The team did work out a few cornerbacks last week as part of a 16-player scheduled workout at Valley Ranch. Corners Reggie Jones, Morgan Trent, Kevin Thomas and Rod Isaac all worked out for the club, who also looked at six safeties.
