Cowboys’ Bid To Land Vet QB Denied; But Suggests Interest

Posted Jun 11, 2013

The Cowboys gave their thoughts on the third quarterback situation on Tuesday, without saying anything at all.

But the simple fact they tried to acquire veteran Mike Kafka off waivers suggests there is some interest in bolstering that position – especially with Tony Romo still nursing a back injury.

Kafka, however, was claimed off waivers by Jacksonville, who had a higher pecking order in the process. Kafka was released by the Patriots on Monday to make room for Tim Tebow.

Kafka, a standout at Northwestern, played four games in 2011 with the Eagles, registering a 47.7 quarterback rating. He threw two interceptions and no touchdowns.  Kafka signed with the Patriots but never played in a game.

The Cowboys have Nick Stephens and Dalton Williams behind backup Kyle Orton, who is getting plenty of reps with Romo out.

And with the Cowboys playing five preseason games this
year, they would likely keep Romo out of most of them – back injury or not. So it makes sense to add a veteran arm, even if they don’t plan on keeping three quarterbacks in the regular season.

Other veteran quarterbacks still on the market include Byron Leftwich, Tyler Thigpen, Vince Young, Charlie Batch, JaMarcus Russell and Matt Leinart.
