DB Sterling Moore To Join Cowboys; DE Bass Headed To IR

Posted Nov 30, 2012

IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys could have a new player in uniform Sunday night against the Eagles in defensive back Sterling Moore, who has been claimed off the Patriots practice squad.

Moore, a second-year pro who played at SMU, will likely be available to play against the Eagles at Cowboys Stadium.

To make room on the 53-man roster, the Cowboys are expected to place defensive end Ben Bass on injured reserve. Bass suffered an ankle injury this week in practice. However, with Sean Lissemore returning to action this week after missing nearly seven full games with a high-ankle sprain, Bass’ playing time would’ve likely diminished with a chance he could’ve been inactive this week.

The Cowboys have a strong need for a defensive back, especially with safety Charlie Peprah listed as doubtful with an ankle injury. Peprah was in a walking boot on Friday and isn’t expected to play. The Cowboys will also be without cornerback Orlando Scandrick, who has a broken left hand and could be out for the rest of the regular season.

Moore has playing experience with the Patriots, who used in their nickel defense for most of the games this season. He was waived on Oct. 31 but re-signed to the practice squad. Last year, Moore played in nine games, including three in the playoffs. He has experience both at cornerback and safety.

For the Cowboys, he’ll likely be used on special teams, but could have a role in the nickel defense if he’s active.

The season is over for Bass, who had quite a journey to just stick around with the Cowboys, who invited him to participate in rookie minicamp on a tryout basis only. Bass was impressive enough to get signed to the 90-man roster but stuck around and made it to the practice squad and then the 53-man roster after Kenyon Coleman went to IR three weeks ago.
