Despite Missing Practice, Big Hits, "No Issues" For QB's Back

Posted Aug 25, 2014

ARLINGTON, Texas – Despite getting sacked three times Saturday night, including a direct shot to the back, Tony Romo didn't practice on Monday and certainly won't play Thursday in the preseason finale against the Broncos.

Still, Jerry Jones said the Cowboys are not concerned at all with Romo's back and extended rehab.

"No issue with his back," Jones said Monday night following a sponsorship deal with Hublot as the new luxury watch of the Cowboys. "As a matter of fact, we all were pleased that he got the kind of test that he got and he is too. There is no issue after being sacked three times there. Everybody did get in there and look for ways to keep that from happening. Actually, as it turns out, we need to get our backs in there with a little crisper on a couple of their blocks was probably the bigger issue."

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys' VP and director of player personnel, said it was only good to see Romo take those hits because he was able to get up from them.

"Well you cringe … I think any owner takes a cringe anytime the quarterback gets hit hard, healthy, not healthy, whatever the situation is," Jones said. "But that's our game and keep your fingers crossed and hope they hold up."

Head coach Jason Garrett said Romo, "seemed to hold up fairly well throughout that ballgame."
The schedule all preseason and training camp has been to hold Romo out for consecutive practices as he rehabs from a back injury that required surgery to repair a herniated disk last December.

Romo missed the preseason opener vs. San Diego but played 14 snaps against the Ravens, before 32 snaps Saturday night in Miami.

Like most of the starters, Romo will not play Thursday against the Broncos in the final preseason game – a game clubs generally don't even put their starters in full pads. However, the Cowboys might have a few exceptions in Morris Claiborne and Henry Melton, who have missed all of the preseason with injuries.
