Eatman: Game With St. Louis Next Year Just Got Interesting

Posted Jan 25, 2013

We’re not exactly sure when the Rams game will be next fall, but it will be at Cowboys Stadium.

Another guarantee is that Rob Ryan will have something entertaining to say the week of the game, if not long before that.

As was expected about two weeks ago, Ryan is now officially the new defensive coordinator in St. Louis. He’ll take over a Rams defense that ranked right in the middle of the league in all three categories. St. Louis was 14th overall and 15th against both the run and pass.

The Cowboys let Ryan go as the first major coaching move of the offseason. However, the three main coaches he brought with him to Dallas are all staying on the Cowboys’ staff. Defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson, linebackers coach Matt Eberflus and defensive assistant Ben Bloom, who were all under Ryan at one point in Cleveland, will remain on Monte Kiffin’s staff here with the Cowboys.

Last year, the Cowboys had numerous injuries on defense, losing as many as six starters or key reserves due to injury in Sean Lee, Bruce Carter, Jay Ratliff, Kenyon Coleman, Barry Church, Orlando Scandrick.

The Cowboys were ranked No. 1 in total defense after the third week of the season and fifth at the midway point. But as the injuries piled up, the defensive stats started to plummet and the Cowboys finished the year 19th in total defense, allowing 355.4 yards per game.

Since Ryan joined the Cowboys as defensive coordinator in 2011, he’s been no stranger to providing memorable quotes, including a final one soon after he was dismissed, stating he would land another job “in five minutes.”

While it was closer to two weeks, Ryan is still back on his feet and will likely have an interesting matchup this year with the Cowboys, at some point in the regular season.
