Eatman: Super Bowl Includes Only Few Former Cowboys

Posted Jan 31, 2013

It doesn’t matter if it’s a preseason game or the Super Bowl, I can’t watch two other teams play and not glance through the roster looking for familiar names.
Having covered this Cowboys team for a while, you always want to see someone that has passed through here succeed at a level like this.

Even though he doesn’t start, it’d be great to see Leonard Davis get a Super Bowl ring. That doesn’t mean I’m rooting for the 49ers come Sunday, but I wouldn’t say I’m rooting against them. At this point, it doesn’t really matter.

But for Davis, who has never fully lived up to the expectations of being the No. 2 overall pick in 2001, he has been a good player for most of his career. I think the problem for Davis was that he should’ve played guard all along but the cardinals had to justify picking him No. 2 and to pay him what that cost back then, he had to play tackle. But it wasn’t until he got to Dallas in 2007 and switched to guard that he started to reach his potential and make Pro Bowls.

While he’s a backup with the 49ers now, he does play some on goal-line and short-yardage situations.

If he gets a ring, it’ll be deserved. Anyone who has spent more than a decade in this game and played at a high level should be rewarded.

The Ravens have a couple of former Cowboys, although only one is expected to play Sunday. That would be rookie outside linebacker Adrian Hamilton, who spent training camp with the team but was released before the start of the season.

Hamilton, who had 22 sacks as a senior at Prairie View A&M, wasn’t that impressive in the preseason games or practices. His lack of special teams experience ended up hurting his chances to make the team, coupled with the Cowboys having drafted Kyle Wilber in the fourth round.

Hamilton spent most of the year on the Ravens’ practice squad but was called up to the roster for the last three games of the season. He has a reserve defensive role and will play some on special teams.

The Ravens also have running back Lonyae Miller on the practice squad. Miller was with the Cowboys for two training camps in 2010-11 and played four games as a rookie in 2010. Despite having a promising start to the 2011 camp, Miller was released before the season began. He has been with the Raiders and now on Baltimore’s practice squad.
