FB Olawale Going To Oakland; Signed Off Dallas Practice Squad

Posted Dec 4, 2012

The Cowboys lost running back Jamize Olawale to the Raiders, who signed him to their 53-man roster on Tuesday.

Olawale had spent all season with the Cowboys on their practice squad. While there were some in-house discussions about possibly calling Olawale up to the roster earlier in the season when the Cowboys had injury issues at running back, the Cowboys never went that route.

Now, Olawale is headed to Oakland.

Olawale, who played wide receiver at North Texas before moving to running back, went undrafted and eventually joined the Cowboys on a tryout basis for their rookie minicamp in early May. He was impressive enough to land a spot on the 90-player roster and went to training camp, where he continued to turn heads.

In the preseason games, Olawale even looked like a possible candidate to make the 53-man roster as a versatile back, who can play fullback and tailback.

Olawale led the team with 124 rushing yards on 32 attempts (3.9 yards) with one touchdown. He also had four catches for 30 yards.

The day before the final roster cuts, the Cowboys had to cut 22 players but only asked for 20 playbooks, leaving two decisions to make. Olawale was one of those before the Cowboys decided to release him and keep him back on the practice squad.
