Games-Played Streak Ends For Ware; Expects To Run Monday

Posted Oct 20, 2013

PHILADELPHIA – Of all the things that occurred Sunday in Philadelphia, arguably the most shocking event was what didn’t happen on the field.

DeMarcus Ware didn’t play.

In nine seasons, that has never happened. Many, including Ware, thought it never would.

But the Cowboys and Ware treated Sunday’s game with the Eagles as a true Week 7 affair, knowing there are nine more games, and perhaps more, after this week.

So while Ware likely could’ve limped through this game with a quad strain he suffered last week, the decision was made to play it conservative and think more about the big picture.

Still, it was hard for Ware to sit out.

“It was different, but I was able to put on my coach’s hat,” Ware said after the game. “I was able to help out those guys and watch the game from a different perspective. You see some of the plays you could make. But because of the injury, I knew I couldn’t be out there this time.”

Ware quickly turned into a sideline mentor for the new guys such as Jason Vega, who signed on Friday, and Jarius Wynn, who showed up on Monday. George Selvie and Kyle Wilber aren’t exactly experienced vets. However, Ware said having them play well like they did Sunday will allow him to return from the injury when he’s fully recovered.

“It’s all about being healthy,” Ware said. “When you have guys coming and still being effective, that’s what you want.”

While Ware saw his streak of 134 consecutive games played come to an end, he will try to start up a new streak come Sunday against the Lions. Ware said he will start running again on Monday with the hope of playing in Detroit.
