Reports: TE Coach Applies For Delaware Head Coach Position

Posted Jan 15, 2013

IRVING, Texas – According to multiple reports, Cowboys tight end coach John Garrett, who is also the team’s passing game coordinator, has applied for the head coaching job at Delaware.

Garrett has been on the Cowboys’ staff since Jason Garrett became offensive coordinator in 2007. In 2011 when Jason Garrett was promoted to head coach, John Garrett was named passing game coordinator, along with his tight end duties.

The story was first reported by CBS Sports.

During this offseason with so much expected change, there has been speculation about John Garrett’s future with the Cowboys. Different reports have suggested the Cowboys are urging Jason Garrett to make a few staff changes, including his brother John. However, neither Cowboys owner Jerry Jones or Jason Garrett has been available for comment since the end of the season.

So far, the club has dismissed Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator and running backs coach Skip Peete. Ryan has since been replaced by Monte Kiffin, who will likely switch the defense to a 4-3 scheme. Also, assistant strength coach Walt Williams is not returning next year after two seasons under strength coach Mike Woicik.

As for John Garrett, one of three brothers in the organization along with Jason and pro scouting director Judd Garrett, this isn’t the first time he’s looked outside of the Cowboys for a new gig. Last year, he interviewed for the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator position.

Before joining the Cowboys in 2007, John Garrett spent three years at the University of Virginia, where he was assistant head coach. Garrett also helped recruit and coach both Kevin Ogletree and John Phillips, who joined the Cowboys’ roster in 2009.

This past week, Delaware fired longtime head coach K.C. Keeler, who spent 11 years with the Blue Hens, including a season coaching Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco.

The Garrett family still lives in New Jersey, not far from Delaware’s campus.
