With Senior Bowl Coming Up, Staff Changes Expected Soon

Posted Jan 15, 2013

IRVING, Texas – With the coaches expected to depart for Mobile, Ala. next week for the Senior Bowl, it’ll be a busy week here at Valley Ranch as the Cowboys look to solidify their coaching staff.

Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis interviewed for the Chicago Bears head coaching job, but confirmed he was not one of the final three candidates.

DeCamillis was on the Jaguars’ radar for a head coaching job last year, but this was his first official interview for the head coach position. He described the Chicago interview process as a “good experience” for the veteran special teams coach, who has spent 25 years as an NFL assistant coach, including the last four in Dallas, where he has another year remaining on his contract.

At this point, none of the current coaches on the Cowboys’ staff are guaranteed to return in 2013, especially on defense.

With new coordinator Monte Kiffin taking over, coupled with the fact assistants Matt Eberflus and Jerome Henderson have Rob Ryan ties to the 3-4 scheme, it’s likely a few new defensive coaches will be in the mix.

And what about on offense? The Cowboys are reportedly toying with the idea of hiring a new play-caller, allowing head coach Jason Garrett to oversee the entire team more on game-day.

Offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who is currently the team’s offensive coordinator, has said he would like to call plays if the opportunity presents itself. That would take him away from some of his offensive-line duties but Callahan appears to be in the mix as a play-caller.

The one change that has been made on offense is the dismissal of running backs coach Skip Peete.  But it’s likely more changes are on the horizon.

Assistant strength coach Walt Williams, who spent the last two years with the club under head strength and conditioning coach Mike Woicik, will not return next season. Williams’ contract expired after the season and it appears he will purse non-coaching opportunities.
