After Tues. Workout, McBriar Decides To Sign With Philadelphia

Posted Jul 25, 2012

The most successful punter in Cowboys history is taking his services to Philadelphia.

Just one day after working out in Dallas, Mat McBriar decided to sign a one-year deal with the rival Eagles. It’s likely McBriar not only received more than the Cowboys were willing to offer, but he won’t have much competition for the job.

In Dallas, the Cowboys are excited about Chris Jones and if McBriar were to sign, he would’ve likely competed in a 50-50 competition for the job.

McBriar spent eight years in Dallas and earned two Pro Bowl selections, most recently in 2010 when he led the NFL in both punting average and net average.

Last year, McBriar suffered through a nagging nerve injury in his left foot that cost him two games. He underwent successful surgery to remove a cyst behind his left knee back in February with the hopes of igniting the nerves once again.

McBriar said back in May the injury was healing as scheduled and expected to make a full recovery.

One source inside Valley Ranch said McBriar’s workout on Tuesday went “very well” but it still came down to a numbers game, plus the Cowboys’ expectations for Jones, an undrafted rookie last year who filled in twice for McBriar.

The Cowboys also have versatile Delbert Alvarado, who can help Dan Bailey with the place-kicking.

McBriar is the Cowboys’ all-time leader in punting average (45.3) and net average (38.1) among qualifying punters with at least 300 attempts.
