Cowboys Add TCU Rookie RB Wesley; Waive RB Scott

Posted Jul 26, 2012

Two days into camp and the Cowboys are already making roster moves, possibly upgrading the running back position.

The team waived rookie Darrell Scott, who suffered a hip injury early in Wednesday’s practice. Scott was sent to waived/failed physical list, opening the door for the Cowboys to sign yet another local running back product.

Former TCU tailback Ed Wesley, who went undrafted in the NFL Supplemental Draft back only July 12, signed with the Cowboys and spent Thursday’s practice trying to learn on the run.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity” said Wesley, who was wearing the same No. 35 worn by Scott the previous day. “I’ve got to call my mom down. She’s a little too excited about it. But she was the one who told me the Cowboys had called to sign me.”

Wesley said he was extremely disappointed he wasn’t drafted in the Supplemental Draft.

“I really thought I was going to get picked up,” said Wesley, who worked out for 14 teams in the last two weeks, including the Cowboys. “Obviously I wasn’t in the shape I needed to be in at the time. But it also gave me a little time to think about how I was going about things and improve what I was doing. I started to get in shape a little better. And I’m here now. I’m just blessed to be in the city where I graduated high school from.”

Wesley went to Irving High School and then starred at TCU before deciding to leave the team this year because of family reasons. Wesley said Thursday his mother suffers from rheumatoid arthritis.

Last year, Wesley rushed for 726 yards and six touchdowns, while splitting time with two other tailbacks in TCU’s rotating backfield.

Wesley joins North Texas rookie Lance Dunbar, who has turned some heads this offseason. Both players will try to unseat Phillip Tanner as the No. 3 back behind DeMarco Murray and Felix Jones.
