Wilber Anxious To Join Fellow Rookies; Set To Debut Sunday

Posted Sep 13, 2012

For Morris Claiborne, Tyron Crawford and James Hanna, they’ve already experienced those first-game jitters and what it’s like to get a victory with their new team. But another member of the 2012 draft class is eager to join the party.

Fourth-round pick Kyle Wilber is expected to make his pro debut Sunday in Seattle after missing the season opener with a thumb injury. Wilber had surgery back in early August on his broken thumb and is now wearing a cast.

Wilber initially wore a bulky club-like cast, similar to what Sean Lee wore last season, in practice this week.

“I think we’re going to a smaller cast now,” Wilber said. “I need something that opens up a little more so I can use my fingers. I need to be able to grab a little more. So we’re going to have something that really just protects the thumb.”

Wilber said he’s unsure how much he’ll play on defense but did say he’s received a few snaps in sub-packages. If he’s active this week, he will definitely be used on special teams coverage units.

“I’m just excited to get out there with the rest of the guys,” Wilber said. “It’s been frustrating to sit back. I just want to get out there and contribute.”

More than just the broken thumb, which occurred in the preseason opener against the Raiders, Wilber also suffered a broken finger in the first OTA practice back in May, which sidelined him for most of the summer.
