Aikman Thinks Cowboys Should Snag QB Of Future

Posted Feb 1, 2013

IRVING, Texas – Troy Aikman doesn’t think Tony Romo should be replaced any time soon. That doesn’t mean the Cowboys shouldn’t start preparing for the future.

Aikman said he thinks it’s time the Cowboys look at spending a mid-round draft pick on a potential quarterback.

“I like the way that the Packers did it for all those years,” Aikman said on NFL.com, “that you bring a guy in essentially every season, whether you draft him in the fourth round or fifth round or third round, whatever it might be. I think there’s something to be said for that.”

Even after selecting Aaron Rodgers in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft, the Packers took three quarterbacks in the next three drafts. Matt Flynn was the second quarterback picked by Green Bay in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Meanwhile, the only quarterback the Cowboys selected since Romo came to the team undrafted in 2003 was Stephen McGee. The Cowboys used a 2009 fourth-round pick on McGee before giving up on an attempt to develop the Texas A&M product prior to the start of the 2012 season.

"I don't think they need another quarterback – make that clear – but because of Tony's age they certainly have to start addressing who the guy is going to be that comes in after him, and if there's a guy that they can pick up and maybe develop in the third, fourth round, I think that's a real positive thing for them,” Aikman said.

Romo’s 32 years old and has started for the Cowboys since 2006. He finished with a career-high passer rating of 102.5 in 2011, but followed that up this season by equaling his career-high in interceptions. He was forced to throw an exorbitant amount in 2012 to make up for a stagnant rushing attack, finishing with career highs in passing yards (4,903), completions (425) and attempts (648).
