Andre Holmes To Practice Squad; Tevita Finau Released

Posted Nov 27, 2012

IRVING, Texas - Andre Holmes’ tenure in Dallas isn’t finished.

The wide receiver was signed to the practice squad Tuesday, one day after getting released from the 53-man roster. The Cowboys cut practice squad defensive tackle Tevita Finau to make room for Holmes.

Head coach Jason Garrett hinted Monday that Holmes’ future in Dallas might not be done, stating, “We’ll see what the rest of that story is.” The Cowboys were able to retain Holmes after he passed through waivers.

Garrett also had some generous words about Holmes, who Garrett clearly figured wouldn’t be leaving town.

“We still like Andre,” Garrett said. “We just felt like we had to make a roster move to help our team. He’s played a little bit of a role for us on offense, more of a role on special teams. He’s been on and off the active roster here for most of the year. He’s a guy we continue to like and develop. We thought this was a good move for our team.”

Most of Holmes’ experience came on special teams in the seven games he played in. The 6-4 receiver only caught two passes for 11 yards and is still viewed as a project after challenging to be the third receiver in training camp.

Veteran receiver Anthony Armstrong replaced Holmes on the active roster and figures to have a more impactful role both offensively and on special teams, helping out with depth at a receiver position that was missing both Miles Austin and Kevin Ogletree for the majority of the Thanksgiving game.

“He’s a guy we’ve liked really for a number of years,” Garrett said of Armstrong. “We knew him coming out. We’ve competed against him. He’s fast and as a receiver can contribute on special teams. He’s tough and also can be a guy that can help your team in a lot of different ways.”
