Beasley Takes Blame For His Route On Final Pick

Posted Dec 15, 2013

IRVING, TexasCole Beasley took accountability and accepted the blame on the Cowboys’ game-sealing pick, which was their second intercepted pass in the last three minutes of the fourth quarter.

Tony Romo threw his first interception with 2:58 remaining in the fourth quarter and followed on the next drive with another pick on a second-and-1 pass intended for Beasley, who cut his out route short.

Beasley said that he should have kept going on his route. As he put it, he didn’t have the option “to throttle down” on that particular play.

“We didn’t execute how we were supposed to. I take full responsibility for it,” Beasley said. “I just have to keep running, catch the ball and take the hit.”

The first play of that drive was a similar pass to Beasley on an out route that went for nine yards. The interception occurred on the next play, when Tramon Williams took outside leverage in zone.

The pass was placed out in front of Beasley, where the route was drawn up, and into the hands of Williams. Beasley said that was his fault. At first, the pass was ruled incomplete, but the officials reviewed the play and the call was reversed.

“He ended up cutting his route off, and I threw it as if he was continuing to go to the sideline,” Romo said. “So we’ll get that right. We’ll go back and assess the whole process and get it right.”

Head coach Jason Garrett described the play as a miscommunication on how Beasley was going to run the route. He said Beasley and Romo weren’t on the same page on how to read the defense.

As a result, that play capped off the end of the collapse for the Cowboys, who threw 21 passes and ran seven times in the second half after taking a 23-point lead into halftime.

With just one timeout remaining after the final interception, all Green Bay had to do was kneel three times to close out the game.

“Certainly, it didn’t work out well for us,” Garrett said. “We’ll go back and look at what we did and certainly make the adjustments going forward.”
