Cowboys Add QB Depth, Sign Dallas Native Caleb Hanie

Posted Apr 24, 2014

IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys added another arm by signing a one-year deal with quarterback Caleb Hanie.

Hanie, a Dallas native who went to Forney High School, spent most of his NFL career with the Bears after going undrafted in 2008. He played in 10 games from 2009-11 in Chicago, compiling a 50.9 completion percentage with three touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Hanie spent time briefly with the Broncos, Ravens and Browns after leaving the Bears in 2011, most recently going to Cleveland. He hasn’t played in a regular season game since leaving Chicago.

The Cowboys need arms during their offseason
program with Tony Romo coming off back surgery. In addition, Kyle Orton’s been absent during the voluntary workouts this week and it’s still uncertain when or if he will return as he reportedly mulls retirement.

Hanie’s got some postseason experience, as he had to enter and play against the Packers in the NFC Championship Game in 2010, going 13-for-20 for 153 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions after Jay Cutler got hurt and Todd Collins struggled.

The Brandon Weeden signing earlier this offseason provided some relief at the position and another quarterback with some NFL experience. Hanie could end up competing with Weeden for a spot on the roster, but for now the team just needs depth at the position as most of the players begin to report.
