Notes: Hurd Arrested Again For Failing Tests, Spears Returns

Posted Aug 9, 2012

OXNARD, Calif. - Former Cowboys and Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd was arrested Thursday for violating his bond by failing two drug tests, according to Fox 29 in San Antonio.

He’s currently awaiting trial in a federal drug trafficking case. Hurd was arrested last December in Chicago and indicted on two counts, before being released on a $100,000 cash bond.

The report states Hurd failed his first drug test in May and a second on July 12, testing positive for marijuana and admitting to drug use both times.

His attorney, Mike McCrum, said Hurd is going through a difficult time and succumbed to pressure, according to the report.

Spears, Williams Return

Marcus Spears and Teddy Williams both returned from concussion-like symptoms to practice fully Thursday.

Spears said he doesn’t feel far behind, picking up quickly on the minor adjustments made during his absence for a few days. He’s four or five pounds heavier than the weight he wants to play at, which he said shouldn’t be difficult to drop with the remaining practices before the season starts.

“I had a clear head, didn’t have any mental errors, so I think I’m thinking right,” Spears said. “It was fun to get back to it. When you’re injured and you’re sitting over there on the side, it kind of gets boring.”

Bernadeau First Team

Mackenzy Bernadeau split first-team reps with Ronald Leary at right guard. Bernadeau practiced fully for the first time since signing with the Cowboys in March and undergoing hip surgery.

Head coach Jason Garrett and offensive coordinator Bill Callahan said Bernadeau would return to his normal position of guard, and could later take snaps at center, where he played in the preseason for four years in Carolina.

Bernadeau was signed to a four-year, $11 million deal in the offseason, with the expectation of starting at guard.

Hamilton Injured

Linebacker Adrian Hamilton left practice after spraining his wrist, and will likely have a precautionary X-ray.

The undrafted rookie from Prairie View A&M recorded 20.5 sacks as a senior at the FCS level. He is competing with second-year pro Alex Albright for a spot on the 53-man roster.
