Ogletree Joins John Garrett After Taking Deal With Tampa Bay

Posted Mar 14, 2013

IRVING, Texas – Kevin Ogletree will be coached by a member of the Garrett family next season, but it won’t be Jason.

Ogletree will join former Cowboys tight ends coach and current Buccaneers wide receivers coach John Garrett in Tampa Bay after accepting a deal with the Bucs on Thursday.

He becomes the second former Cowboy and University of Virginia football player to leave Dallas early in free agency, after tight end John Phillips went to San Diego.

Ogletree appeared to be set for a breakout season after recording eight catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns in the opener against the Giants, but that spectacular performance was only a red herring. Apart from a Week 9 matchup against the Falcons, in which he caught three passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, Ogletree never eclipsed the 60-yard mark in another game in 2012.

Ogletree petered out down the stretch, finishing with no more than 28 yards in any of the last seven games of the season, as Dwayne Harris and Cole Beasley emerged as third receiver threats. Ogletree ended the year with 32 catches for 436 yards and four touchdowns.

While all of those were career-highs for Ogletree, they weren’t the numbers the Cowboys hoped for out of their third receiver to warrant an extension after four seasons in Dallas.
