Practice Report: One Safety Returns; D-Line Depleted

Posted Sep 19, 2012

IRVING, Texas – Numerous Cowboys hobbled off the field at different points of the Seahawks game Sunday, and safety Barry Church seemed to be the only one running back on the field for practice Wednesday.

The defensive line was hit the hardest, with defensive tackles Kenyon Coleman (knee) and Marcus Spears (ankle) both sitting out. Coleman was seen on crutches with a wrap on his knee early this week at Valley Ranch, while safety Gerald Sensabaugh donned a boot on his foot.

Sensabaugh’s injury is to his calf, and he was not on the field either on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Church returned to practice after suffering a quad contusion in Seattle. The healthy options to fill Sensabaugh’s spot would be Danny McCray, Mana Silva and Mario Butler, who played both cornerback and safety in the preseason.

“Gerald’s health is up in the air,” said head coach Jason Garrett. “We don’t know his availability here in the next couple days of practice and going into this ballgame. So the next guy has to be available.”

Also back on the field and stretching with the team was nose tackle Jay Ratliff, though he didn't dress out and didn't participate.

If injuries to Ratliff, Coleman and Spears persist through the weekend, it’s likely rookie Tyrone Crawford’s role will expand on the defensive line.

“He’s raw, and he’s learning a lot,” Garrett said. “But you really see his development almost on a daily basis. It really multiplied that when you talk about playing in games against the opponents he’s working against this early in his career. We’re excited about his progress. He’ll get better and better. He played more in the Seattle game than he did against the Giants. We anticipate him getting more snaps as we go.”

Linebacker Sean Lee was back on the field after a crushing block from Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate, but was listed as a limited participant with a hip injury, while linebacker Alex Albright (stinger) didn't participate at all.

Safety Matt Johnson (hamstring) and center Phil Costa (back) continue to be sidelined by their respective injuries.
