Practice Squad QB Alex Tanney Off To The Browns

Posted Nov 26, 2013

IRVING, Texas – Quarterback Alex Tanney has been signed off the Cowboys' practice squad by the Cleveland Browns.

The quarterback tweeted about getting picked up by the Browns on Tuesday morning: “Thankful for everything the Jones family and Dallas staff has done for me. Great organization. New chapter starts in Cleveland today #Browns”

Tanney came to the Cowboys on July 21 to add depth for training camp and to give starter Tony Romo and backup Kyle Orton more rest during that time. Head coach Jason Garrett confirmed the news about Tanney and said there was a thought to move him to the 53-man roster, but the team couldn't afford to do so with so many injuries at other positions.

“They signed him off of our practice roster, and he’s done a really nice job for us," Garrett said. "We got a chance to see him in training camp do some positive things. He played in the preseason, did some positive things, and he’s really approached it well once the season started to take charge of that scout team and do a good job with that.”

The quarterback was more famous for his trick shot video than anything else when he came to training camp, but he immediately turned heads with his arm strength, accuracy and mobility and put together a productive enough preseason to warrant the Cowboys bringing him back to the practice squad after he cleared waivers.

His best preseason game came against Arizona, when he completed 14-of-19 passes with a touchdown and an interception.

Tanney was previously with the Chiefs, where he signed after going undrafted in 2012 out of Monmouth College. He set the NCAA record for all-time career touchdown passes among all divisions, finishing with 157.
