IRVING, Texas – Executive vice president Stephen Jones made it clear he’d like quarterback Tony Romo to stick around a few more years, and informal discussions have already begun to try to make that happen.

Jones said Wednesday on 105.3 FM “The Fan” that Romo deserves an extension and the quarterback understands how getting a deal done can help the salary cap situation and assist in bringing in a more talented supporting cast.

“We’re going to get our situation with Tony worked out,” Jones said. “He’s as motivated as we are.

“With this particular situation with Tony, we think we have a great quarterback, and we want him to be our quarterback here for the next four or five years. We’re fortunate that we have a really good quarterback, if not a great one, and he deserves to be paid.”

Romo’s deal is up at the end of the 2013 season, and he’s scheduled to count more than $16 million against the cap. Jones said while salary cap issues are important and fascinating for the media and fans, people tend to panic too much about being too high over the cap.

“Everybody always gets under,” Jones said. “That’ll be the case here with us. We’re going to put together what we hope to be a championship caliber football team.”

Regardless of the level of concern Jones has for getting under the cap, it’s no mystery that a deal with Romo will help get that done. He said no one wants to win and have success more than Romo, and the quarterback wants as good a team around him as possible to compete for a championship after barely missing out on the playoffs the last two seasons.

Getting the extension done with Romo could also help free room to re-sign linebacker Anthony Spencer. Jones said he plans on meeting with Spencer’s agent, Jordan Woy, at the NFL Combine this week.

“We’re going to touch base with them,” Jones said. “We’re not in the business of losing great players. Tony’s a great player, we’re working on that. Spencer, if we can work things out, we’d sure like to have him back.”
