With Witten Healthy, Cowboys Waive 4th Tight End Cochart

IRVING, Texas - Tight end Colin Cochart’s tenure in Dallas didn’t last long.

Cochart was released Tuesday, less than two weeks after being acquired Sept. 1 on waivers from Cincinnati. With Jason Witten uncertain to play in the opener due to a spleen injury that had sidelined him since the first preseason game, the Cowboys had brought in Cochart as an emergency tight end option.

Instead, Witten suited up and Cochart never made the trip to New Jersey.

Practice squad running back Lance Dunbar made the trip but was never activated. The Cowboys had seriously considered waiving Cochart to make room for Dunbar, who was a special teams contributor during practice, but the team decided against it the day of the game.

The move freed a roster spot, but the Cowboys haven’t made a corresponding roster move as of yet, though they are believed to be in the market for help in the secondary.

Cochart caught five passes for 44 yards and a touchdown last season as an undrafted rookie for the Cincinnati Bengals. He appeared in 10 games with three starts, but was waived on the Bengals’ final cuts this summer.
