DALLAS - Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has always called Dallas National Golf Club one of his favorite courses to play.

But Monday's round won't go down as a memorable one for the Cowboys quarterback, who was trying to qualify for the U.S. Open golf tournament.

Romo shot an eight-over par round of 80 at the Dallas course in the local qualifying round of the open. Only six golfers from the 102 participants advance to the sectional round.

When Romo turned in his scorecard, there were already six scores ranging from 73 (one-over) to 75. Romo has now attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open four times but has never made it past the first round.

For a moment on Monday, it appeared Romo would have a shot at the sectionals. He made par on his first six holes before an eight-foot birdie putt at the seventh hole put him at one-under par. But that would prove to be Romo's only birdie of the day.

He started the back stretch at even par, but from the 11th hole to the 17th, he had five bogeys and one triple-bogey on the 17th hole.

Towards the end of the round, Romo said it was nearly the longest round of golf he ever played, finishing just short of six hours. And that was only after he completed his usual Monday workout at Valley Ranch, which he had to move up a couple of hours.

Although he came up short for the U.S. Open, this is only the start of a busy week of golf for Romo, who will play in McKinney on Tuesday in attempt to qualify for the Byron Nelson Championship, played here in nearby Las Colinas.

On Wednesday, Romo is scheduled to play in the Cowboys' annual sponsor golf tournament, held at the Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine.
