IRVING, Texas - More than a month after the Cowboys made their decision, the team officially released cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones Monday afternoon.

The Cowboys sent out a press release on Jan. 7, but it stated in the release that the official move would be done on Feb. 9, the first day teams can officially release players. Since the end of the season, the rosters are technically "frozen" which keeps players from signing with playoff teams.

However, the start of free agency does not begin until Feb. 27.

In his only season with the Cowboys, who acquired Jones through a draft-day trade with the Titans, the cornerback served a six-game NFL suspension for his involvement in a scuffle with his own personal bodyguard at a Dallas hotel back in early October.

Although the Cowboys inherited Jones' original contract with the Titans, which expires after the 2011 season, they will not take a salary cap hit, considering his bonus was on Tennessee's books last season when he was dealt to the Cowboys for a fourth-round pick in 2008. The trade also included the Cowboys giving Tennessee a sixth-round pick in 2009, but because of Jones' suspension, it not only nullified that pick, which goes back to Dallas, the Titans then had to give the Cowboys an additional fifth-round pick next season.

During his suspension, which was originally four games although league Commissioner Roger Goodell waited another two games before officially reinstating him, Jones reportedly attended an alcohol rehabilitation program.

Jones ended the year with nine games played, with six starts. He finished 17th on the team with 33 tackles, including 27 solos. Jones tied with Terence Newman for the team lead with 13 pass deflections.

Where Jones was somewhat disappointing was in the return game, especially on punt returns where he had four runbacks for touchdowns in his two years with the Titans. But Jones averaged a mere 4.5 yards per return on 21 attempts with Dallas. His longest punt return was just 18 yards.

While Pacman is the first player the Cowboys have released in the off-season, he probably won't be the only roster casualty. It's expected the club will part ways with veteran backup quarterback Brad Johnson.

Also, the Cowboys have some tough decisions to make regarding their own free agents, especially unrestricted players such as defensive end Chris Canty, safety Keith Davis, linebackers Kevin Burnett and Zach Thomas, and defensive tackle Tank Johnson.
