IRVING, Texas - Cowboys offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Jason Garrett is among several candidates for the Denver Broncos' head coaching vacancy, created Tuesday when Mike Shanahan was fired after 14 seasons.
Garrett is expected to interview with Denver on Tuesday. Other candidates confirmed by the Broncos are Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Buccaneers defensive backs coach Raheem Morris and Broncos offensive coordinator Rick Dennison. The Broncos have met with Spagnuolo, McDaniels and Morris and also are expected to interview Dennison on Tuesday.
Garrett, the Cowboys' offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, interviewed with the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons last year but opted to return to Dallas with a significant bump in salary.
The Cowboys dropped from third to 13th in total offense this season (294.3 yards per game) yet still averaged 24.7 points in Romo's 13 starts (he missed three with a fractured pinkie finger). But they scored only 63 points in their final four games, including three losses to defensive stalwarts Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Philadelphia.
The Broncos also have plenty of offensive talent. Led by third-year quarterback Jay Cutler, they finished second in total offense (395.8 yards per game) and third in passing offense (279.4 avg.). But Shanahan lost his job after Denver (8-8) lost its final three games and failed to clinch an AFC playoff berth.
The Detroit Lions last week also received permission to speak with Garrett about their head coaching vacancy.
