IRVING, Texas - Something sure looked fishy at the start of Wednesday's practice, Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman appearing somewhat uncomfortable running while participating in some warm-up drills. In fact, at one point before practice even began, he was seen talking with Cowboys trainer Jim Maurer and fidgeting with the upper portion of his inner thigh.
Well, sure enough, by Friday, even though he practiced on Wednesday and Thursday, Newman, who missed the season opener and did not start in Game Two because of the slightly torn groin suffered the first week of training camp, landed on the injury report, listed as questionable after being limited in the final full practice of the week.
That means he is 50-50 to play in the 3:15 p.m. game on Sunday at Texas Stadium against the Cincinnati Bengals, who come into the game with two of the better wide receivers in the NFL, Chad "Ocho Cinco" Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh, along with the real possibility of having activated Chris Henry, who was reinstated on Monday after completing his four-game NFL suspension.
Newman did not have one of his better performances in the 26-24 loss to Washington this past Sunday, just the second full game he's played since last year. At one point, he was beat by Santana Moss on a double move for a 53-yard reception.
The Pro Bowl corner obviously now will be a game-time decision, and if he can't go, then Pacman Jones will start in his place at left corner. That would cause a trickle-down effect on the sub-packages, likely meaning Orlando Scandrick would handle Newman's slot position when the Cowboys play their three-corner, one-safety formation, along with slot duty on the nickel and dime defenses.
