ROB CAGLEY - SHREVEPORT, LA: When fans write to the mailbag and ask why the Cowboys wouldn't sign such-and-such available free agent, someone usually starts off with, "If he's so great, why did the other team get rid of him?" That's a very good point, and after reading the site, it seems like Gerald Sensabaugh is a great player. So that begs the question, why did Jacksonville let him go?

Nick: I went back and researched a little bit to see what happened there, and him getting arrested for driving on a suspended license about three weeks before the start of free agency didn't help his cause. He also seemed to be asking for a lucrative deal and that's why the Jaguars were going to let him test the waters. But obviously he had no real takers or the Cowboys wouldn't have signed him to a one-year contract. I think he's looked pretty good here in camp but you always have to wonder when his own team lets him go.

Josh: I think a lot of players are let go that we never know the whole story behind. It seemed like to us the Cowboys should have brought back Kevin Burnett, for instance, but you never know what reasons the front office may have for what they do with an individual guy. But you're right about this, and I've been trying to caution that it's too early to get excited over Sensabaugh. I know the arrest record in his hometown didn't help his cause in free agency, the Cowboys just have to hope they'll get a season out of him like Ken Hamlin had on a one-year deal in 2007. And maybe they've learned something about giving him a rich long-term deal after that.

Rob: He's had a couple of minor arrests the last two years, so that might have made teams wary. The Cowboys signed him to only a one-year deal with a starting opportunity. Listen, I wouldn't call Sensabaugh a "great player." He's a good young player who's an upgrade in coverage from Roy Williams and Keith Davis. How much remains to be seen, but Dave Campo coached him for three years in Jacksonville and thinks he makes this defense faster and more versatile. Coming from a veteran defensive coach like Campo, that's a strong recommendation.

OSCAR FLORES JR - SAN JOSE, CA: Not much talk about Pat Watkins. Are the young guys performing better than him, or is he just being steady and there's not much to report? When training camp began I felt he was the guy who would be most on the bubble because of the way the Cowboys were deciding to go younger, and you figure these young safeties will be able to play special teams also.

Nick: Talked to Pat just the other day. He knows the deal right now. He knows that draft picks such as Michael Hamlin and DeAngelo Smith will get more looks. But he's hoping that when it's time to play actual games that his ability to play on special teams will make up some ground for himself.

Josh: Well the thing is I think we all know what Watkins is at this point. He's a very good special-teamer, and that's probably all he's ever going to be, at least from the Cowboys' point of view. That's fine, he can still be a valuable piece on the roster. Personally, I think he needs to be on the team because of what he brings in the kicking game. Maybe the flexibility they've created by training a couple guys to play both corner and safety allows room for a special teams ace in the secondary.

Rob: The young safeties who have stood out most to me are rookie Michael Hamlin and third-year vet Alan Ball, who had two interceptions Monday. Watkins hasn't turned many heads through the first week, but I still think he has a place on this team. He would be a young backup with starting experience, but the main thing is he's a very good special teams player. If the Cowboys are keeping a rookie kickoff specialist/special teams guy like David Beuhler, they can keep a guy like Watkins who led them in special teams tackles two years ago.
