PRO: With the Dallas Cowboys down a punter following an injury to Chris Jones, All-Pro veteran Brian Moorman was signed on Sept. 26. Moorman played his entire career in Buffalo where he held numerous team records including: highest gross punting average (43.9), net average (37.5) and most punts downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line (243) while playing in 179 career games – sixth-most in Bills history. Moorman has been named to two Pro Bowls (2006, 2007), has been voted All-Pro First-Team twice (2005, 2006) and was honored as the NFL’s All-Decade Team Punter of the 2000s.

  • Finished the season with 72 punts for a career-best 48.2 average and a 38.1 net average, with 20 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and a long punt of 66 yards.
  • At Cincinnati (10/2) registered a season-high eight punts for a 40.5 net average and two inside the 20 with a long punt of 65 yards.
  • Had four punts for a 43.5 net average and two inside the 20 with a season-long punt of 66 yards against the N.Y. Jets (11/6).
  • At Miami (11/20) recorded six punts for a 34.6 net average, had a long of 56 and had a punt blocked, which was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown.

  • Punted 75 times for a gross average of 42.4 and a net average of 36.6.
  • Also placed 17 punts inside the 20-yard line and had a long of.
  • Played in his 145th career game in the season opener against Miami (9/12), breaking a tie with Steve Christie and Henry Jones for 23rd on the Bills all-time list, and punted seven times for a gross average of 42.6.
  • At New England (9/26) punted one time for 33 yards while playing in his 147th career game - the second-most games among punters in Bills history.
  • Punted a career-high tying nine times against the N.Y. Jets (10/3) with a net average of 34.7 and a long of 55 with one placed inside the 20.
  • Punted four times against Jacksonville (10/10) with a gross average of 47.3 and a season-long of 61 yards.
  • At Baltimore (10/24) played in his 150th career game and placed one punt inside the 20 for the 209th for his career.
  • Punted a total of seven times against Detroit (11/14) and placed a season-high three punts inside the 20.

 

2009 (Buffalo):

  • Punted 90 times for a 46.6 gross average, a career-high 40.2 net average with 25 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and a long punt of 73 yards.
  • Played in his 130th career game against Tampa Bay (9/20), breaking a tie with Cornelius Bennett for 27th on the club’s participation chart.
  • Became the third NFL punter since 1960 to have two career touchdown passes after tossing a 25-yard touchdown pass to defensive end Ryan Denney for the Bills sole touchdown of the game against New Orleans (9/27).
  • Set a Bills record with 191 career punts inside the 20 surpassing Chris Mohr (190) against Houston (11/1).
  • Against Kansas City (12/3) tied for the ninth longest punt in Bills history and was his longest since his 75-yarder at New England (9/23/07) with a 73-yarder, making it his 13th straight game with a 50+ yard kick.

 

2008              (Buffalo):

  • Totaled 58 punts for a 44.1 average, the fifth-highest in club history.
  • Threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to defensive end Ryan Denney on a fake field goal attempt against Seattle (9/7) to mark his second career completion, and became the sixth non-quarterback in team history to throw a touchdown pass, and first punter, in the NFL to complete a touchdown since Pittsburgh’s Josh Miller (1/28/03).
  • Also tied a career game-high nine punts against the Seahawks to move into second on the Bills all-time punt attempts list.
  • Tied the club record with five punts inside the 20 at St. Louis (9/28).
  • Played in his 128th career game, tying Tony Greene for 28th on the club’s participation chart, against New England (12/28).

 

2007 (Buffalo):

  • Punted 81 times for a gross average of 40.8 and a net average of 37.6, with 30 downed inside the 20 and a long of 75 yards.
  • At New England (9/23) registered seven punts for a 49.0 average with a season-long 75-yard - his longest since an 80-yarder in 2004.
  • Played in his 100th career game against the N.Y. Jets (9/30) and had a 38.7 average on three punts with one landing inside the 20.
  • Posted a 47.4 average on five punts against Dallas (10/8) while also recording a 10-yard rush on a fake punt to mark the eighth rushing attempt of his career.
  • Became the third player in team history to register 500 punts after booting away five kicks and landing one punt inside the 20 for a 45.8 average along with a long of 53 yards against Baltimore (10/21).
  • Punted six times against Miami (12/9) for a 37.2 average with three punts inside the 20, extending his club record to 18 games with at least one kick inside the 20.

  • Earned his second consecutive trip to the Pro Bowl and was named AP All-Pro for the second consecutive season.

  • Tied the club record and finished second in the NFL with 33 punts inside the 20-yard line.

  • Also completed a 24-yard pass on fourth down to cornerback Kevin Thomas.
  • Recorded five punts for the third straight game against New England (10/3) for an average of 51.2 yards with two touchbacks and two inside the 20. Had a 34-yard rush after recovering a high snap in the second quarter to mark the third-longest by a Bills punter all-time.
  • Fighting through 25 mph winds, averaged 53.0 yards-per-punt against Miami (10/17), including a 59-yarder, and was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
  • At San Francisco (12/26) had one punt for 36 yards, which landed inside the 20-yard line. Added a pass attempt on a fake punt, marking his third attempt of the season, the most by a Bills non-quarterback since O.J. Simpson had eight attempts in 1972.

  • Posted a 44.6-yard average on his 85 punts, second in the AFC and tied for third in the NFL.
  • Surpassed Paul McGuire to become the Bills all-time leader in punting average and his 44.56 average also earned him a spot atop the Bills all-time list for highest punting average in a season.
  • Awarded the game ball against New England (9/7) when he averaged 56.5 yards on four punts, including his season-long 71-yarder, the second longest punt in the NFL in 2003.
  • Earned another game ball against Washington (10/19) after averaging 48.5 yards on six punts with three over 50 yards.
  • Punted a career-high nine times at Dallas (11/9) for an average of 40.4 yards.
  • Had four of his six punts fall inside the 20 against Indianapolis (11/23) while also registering the game’s longest run from scrimmage when he jaunted 21 yards.

 

2002 (Buffalo):

  • Selected as a Pro Bowl alternate after finishing second in the AFC and third in the NFL with a 43.1-yard average on 66 punts.
  • Also had the NFL’s longest punt of 2002 with a club-record 84-yarder in game 15 at Green Bay (12/22).
  • Eighteen of his punts were downed inside the 20-yard line.
  • Particularly strong late in the season when the elements made his job more challenging - on a cold and windy late day at Green Bay (12/22), averaged 47.2 yards on his six punts with three downed inside the 20, and a franchise-record 84-yarder.
  • Became the first Bills punter to be named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month when he earned the award in October.

 

2001 (Buffalo):

  • In his first season of NFL action, handled all punting duties and was responsible for kickoffs in the first 10 games.
  • Finished with 80 punts with a 40.8 average and net of 33.8 while landing 16 inside opponents 20-yard line.
  • Made his NFL debut against New Orleans (9/9) with a 51-yard punt in the first quarter and recorded four punts for a 44.3 average. Also threw an incomplete pass on a fake punt late in the second quarter becoming the first Buffalo non-quarterback to throw a pass since Chris Mohr, 11/19/00 at Kansas City.
  • Had four punts of 50+ yards, the first Bill with four in one game, against Pittsburgh (9/30).

  • Also competed on PSU’s indoor and outdoor track team, specializing in the 400-meter hurdles (three-time national champion) and the high hurdles.
  • Was the NCAA’s Division II Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 1999.
  • Was also a Division II All-America selection in football.

 

PERSONAL:

  • Lettered in football, basketball and track at Sedgwick, Kan., High School.
  • Played for the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe during the 2000 and 2001 seasons, leading the league in punting each season.
  • Was a three-time national champion in the 400-meter hurdles and an All-American in the 110-meter hurdles.
  • Was inducted into the NCAA Division II Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2006.
  • Worked as a substitute secondary education teacher earlier in his career.
  • Married to Amber with one son, Cooper.
  • Graduated with a degree in history education.

 

 

COMMUNITY:

  • One of the most admired and respected players in the NFL for his dedication to the community and makes himself available to support the many organizations and agencies involved with the team, but on his own he goes above and beyond to help children – especially children facing cancer.
  • In 2003, established the Brian Moorman PUNT Foundation (www.brianmoorman.org) to support pediatric cancer research, treatment and social programs.
  • A majority of his work is affiliated with Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Carly’s Club, the hospital’s family-centered support group for its patients. Throughout each year, the PUNT Foundation hosts many events to raise awareness to their cause.
  • In 2010, PUNT hosted its Annual Black Tie Gala, a Pottery Painting event and their Annual PUNT Triathlon.
  • In 2010, Brian participated in the 2010 Community Ticket Donation Program by donating 20 season tickets to Carly’s Club. Over 200 people were part of Moorman’s Miracles and attended Buffalo Bills home games where they were also treated to food and beverage coupons compliments of Brian.
  • Supported the Teammates For Kids Foundation by attending their annual dinner held in November which was co-founded by Garth Brooks and Bo Mitchell.
  • Visited Armor Elementary in Hamburg, NY which was named the “Play 60 Super School” through the Back to Football Friday Program and participated in the Ultimate Physical Education Class and presented the $10,000 grant to the school so they can continue their health and wellness initiatives.
