PRO: With Kyle Kosier (foot) landing on injured reserve, the Dallas Cowboys filled his roster spot with Steve Octavien on Nov. 29, 2008. Octavien, a rookie linebacker who spent training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs and some time on the Washington Redskins practice squad, played in two games with Dallas on special teams. He will provide the Cowboys with added depth at linebacker and on special teams coming into the 2009 season.

2008 (Kansas City/Washington/Dallas):

  • Signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as a rookie free agent and, in four preseason games, tallied four tackles and two special teams tackles.
  • Waived/Injured by Kansas City on Aug. 31.
  • Signed to the Redskins practice squad where he was for 10 days before signing with Dallas.
  • Was inactive in his first two games with Dallas before making his NFL debut on special teams with two tackles and a forced fumble against Baltimore (12/20).
  • Played on special teams in the season-ending loss at Philadelphia (12/28).

COLLEGE:

  • Played in 22 games with 10 starts in three years at Nebraska, finishing with 128 tackles, 3.0 sacks, 21.0 tackles for losses, 11 pressures, five breakups and a forced fumble.
  • As a senior, played in all 12 games with eight starts to earn honorable mention All-Big 12 honors as the team's MVP.
  • Finished with 92 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 15.0 tackles for lost yardage, nine hurries and three passes defensed.
  • Played in nine games as a junior and started in the Big 12 Championship game.
  • Tallied 32 tackles, a sack, four tackles for losses, a pressure, two pass breakups and a forced fumble.
  • Started the season opener but was granted a medical redshirt after suffering an injury in the game.
  • Began his collegiate career at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Ill., and in two seasons, helped the school post a 19-3 record.

PERSONAL:

  • Was a three-year starter for Lely High School in Naples, Fl.
  • Was also a standout for the school's track and field team, winning the state discus title as a junior and finishing second as a senior.
  • Carried his track and field skills to William Rainey Harper, running the second leg on the school's 2004 national champion 400-meter relay team.?Also won the Division III discus title with a throw of 164'-7".
  • Earned his degree in sociology from Nebraska.
