Offensive Line
June 25, 2008
The Cowboys filled their roster to capacity this week, signing offensive tackle Ryan Gibbons, who had been with Jacksonville for the last two seasons. Gibbons (6-7, 330) was recently cut by the Jags. He has spent the majority of his time on the practice squad and did play a season in NFL Europa, winning a World Bowl with Hamburg. Gibbons will likely compete for a backup spot, along with Doug Free and Pat McQuistan, and newly-signed veteran Cory Lekkerkerker.
June 19, 2008
After being inactive for all 16 games last year as a rookie, James Marten has received some practice at guard. Drafted in the third-round last year as a tackle from Boston College, Marten fell behind Pat McQuistan and Doug Free as the backups to Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo. There might be more opportunities for Marten to play at guard, where Cory Procter and Joe Berger are the primary backups.
May 14, 2008
The Cowboys added some depth to the offensive line on Wednesday, signing offensive tackle Cory Lekkerkerker and guard Adam Stenavich. Lekkerkerker has played in 26 games the past two years, with the Chargers and Dolphins. Stenavich was on the Packers practice squad in 2006 but out of football last year. He originally joined the Panthers after the draft in 2006, but eventually went to Green Bay after being cut by Carolina. Stenavich played in the final season of NFL Europa, spending the 2007 summer with the Amsterdam Admirals.
April 23, 2008
Cowboys center Cory Procter signed his one-year exclusive rights tender on Wednesday, worth $520,000 for the 2008 season. Proctor, a three-year veteran, came to the Cowboys as a guard, both received considerable action at center this past season when he started the final two games for an injured Andre Gurode. Procter played in all 16 games, mostly on special teams. Procter is expected to enter this season as Gurode's backup but he can also provide some backup help at the guard position as well.
January 18, 2008
Cowboys left tackle Flozell Adams is the only current lineman to play for new offensive line coach Hudson Houck, who was named to the position on Friday. Houck coached the line in Dallas from 1993-2001, coaching Adams for four seasons. Houck said he is not surprised of Adams' career, which includes four Pro Bowl selections in the last five years. Adams is an unrestricted free agent and while Houck said that is not his decision, he would certainly enjoy another shot at coaching the left tackle.
January 10, 2008
Left tackle Flozell Adams will play his fifth career playoff game with the Cowboys, the most by any current player. Adams, a second-round pick in 1998, has yet to experience a playoff win, with the Cowboys not winning in the post-season since 1996. Adams was selected to the Pro Bowl for fourth time in the last five years and was named to second-team All-Pro squad on Wednesday.
January 7, 2008
Center Andre Gurode participated in Monday's walk-through practice and is expected to be ready for Sunday's playoff game with the Giants. The Pro Bowler suffered a sprained left knee in the second half of the Dec. 16 game with the Eagles and missed the last two regular-season games. Backup Cory Procter started the last two games, including the season-finale in Washington when the Cowboys rushed for a franchise-low one rushing yard.
December 7, 2007
The one starting lineman who probably gets the least attention would be left guard Kyle Kosier, who is sandwiched between Pro Bowlers Flozell Adams and Andre Gurode. But Kosier has held his own this year as well and likely has some motivation of his own this week as he returns to Detroit, where he played in all 16 games and had 11 starts for the Lions in 2005. Since joining the Cowboys last year, Kosier has started all 28 games at left guard.
December 5, 2007
Second-year tackle Pat McQuistan worked with the first-team offense on Wednesday with Marc Colombo missing with a sprained left ankle. McQuistan has been the team's swing tackle all season, the only game-day backup at both tackle spots. He did get some playing time at left tackle in the final minutes of the Thanksgiving Day game against the Jets. Wade Phillips said rookie Doug Free would likely be active as the swing tackle if Colombo doesn't play.
December 3, 2007
Cowboys offensive tackle Marc Colombo was held out of Monday's walk-through for precautionary reasons. Colombo missed one play of last Thursday's game with a minor ankle injury. However, it doesn't appear Colombo is in danger of missing this week's game in Detroit. Through the first 12 games, none of the five starting offensive linemen has missed a start.
November 16, 2007
Cowboys guard Leonard Davis was able to practice with the first-team offense on Friday, although he is listed as questionable for Sunday's game with the Redskins. Davis, the starting right guard, suffered a slight high-ankle sprain during Wednesday's practice here at Valley Ranch. If Davis doesn't play, Cory Procter would make his first NFL start.
November 15, 2007
Cowboys left guard Leonard Davis missed practice Thursday here at Valley Ranch after suffering a sprained ankle on Wednesday. Davis, who is having arguably his best season of his career, was able to walk out to practice, wearing work-out clothes. The Cowboys are still unsure on his status for Sunday's game with the Redskins. If Davis is unable to play, the Cowboys would likely turn to Cory Procter, who has yet to play in a game at guard. His only playing time on the offensive line during his career occurred at the end of the Rams game this season, when he relieved Andre Gurode at center.
October 30, 2007
Cowboys left tackle Flozell Adams is one of several players who will likely be unrestricted free agents at the end of the season. With Tony Romo's deal now completed, the Cowboys will turn their attention to other potential free agents, including Adams, whose five-year, $25 million deal he signed in 2003 will expire after the season. Other players whose contracts end this year include Julius Jones, Patrick Crayton, Ken Hamlin and Jacques Reeves. The Cowboys also have a few restricted free agents, such as Marion Barber, Chris Canty and Jay Ratliff.
October 28, 2007
According to a recent study by Forbes.com, Cowboys offensive lineman Leonard Davis is the highest-paid player currently in the entire NFL. Davis ranked 18th on the list among top athletes, with Tiger Woods ($100 million) topping the chart. But with Davis earning $25.4 million between the calendar year of June 2006 and July of this year, he ranks ahead of all other NFL players. Davis signed a Cowboys-record $16 million signing bonus in March, to go along with a $1 million base salary. But Forbes.com also counted most of Davis' $9.3 million total salary from the Cardinals last year on the survey. The only NFL player among the Top 25 was New Orleans running back Reggie Bush, who ranked 23rd by earning $23.8 million.
October 10, 2007
Cowboys Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode has been the anchor for the offensive line this season, but he likely faces his toughest test so far when he battles Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork. However, while the Cowboys will see mostly 4-3 defenses this year, Gurode shouldn't be confused by any 3-4 looks from the Patriots, considering he practices against the Cowboys and their own 3-4 scheme with the nose guard over the ball.
August 10, 2007
Cowboys rookie offensive tackle Doug Free suffered a sprained MCL on his right knee during Thursday's preseason win over the Colts. Free, who started the game in place of Flozell Adams at left tackle, played into the third quarter. The fourth-round pick from Northern Illinois might not be ready for next week's game against Denver, but the injury isn't considered too serious. Free was one of the training camp surprises, taking advantage of the Cowboys holding out starting tackles Adams and Marc Colombo. If Free doesn't play this week and the Cowboys decide to keep resting the starters, it could open the door for third-round pick James Marten, who worked mostly with the second-team offense.
August 8, 2007
The Cowboys trimmed their training camp roster to 83 players Thursday after releasing guard Steve Franklin, who missed the latter part of training camp in San Antonio with a calf strain. The club now has two open spots on its 85-man camp roster.
August 3, 2007
Cowboys offensive tackle Marc Colombo missed the first 14 training camp practices and could even miss another Saturday morning. But head coach Wade Phillips said he expected his starting right tackle to return for the afternoon practice Saturday at the Alamodome. Colombo, who underwent minor knee surgery a month ago, will likely ease his way back into the lineup the way the Cowboys did with left tackle Flozell Adams.
July 31, 2007
Rookie tackle James Marten might have received a new haircut from his teammates, but he is also making solid progress. With Marc Colombo still out following knee surgery, Marten, a third-round pick, has been splitting first-team reps at right tackle. Marten is rotating with second-year pro Pat McQuistan with the first unit, opposite left tackle Flozell Adams.
July 29, 2007
After missing the first seven practices of training camp, offensive tackle Flozell Adams appears ready to return, according to head coach Wade Phillips. The Cowboys have been cautious with Adams, who underwent a knee scope back in June. Phillips said he expects Adams to return to practice Monday morning. "I think there's a good chance that he'll practice in the morning," Phillips said. "Not every drill, we'll bring him back slow." Adams suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in 2005 but played in all 16 games last season, earning his third trip to the Pro Bowl in the last four seasons.
July 12, 2007
With training camp less than two weeks away, the Cowboys made minor roster cuts on Thursday, waiving two rookie free agents - guard Steve Rissler and safety Jasper Johnson. Rissler started for Florida's national championship team, but was rather expendable after the team re-signed center Matt Tarullo and guard Steve Franklin in the last month. Johnson, a rookie from Central Arkansas, was a long shot even to make the practice squad. The Cowboys still have to release one player to make the 85-man camp roster limit before the team reports to San Antonio on July 24.
June 28, 2007
The Cowboys signed guard Steve Franklin on Thursday, adding some depth to the middle of the offensive line. Franklin (6-2, 302) went to training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs last summer, but was released just before the regular season. An undrafted rookie from Syracuse, Franklin will likely compete for a backup position behind expected starters Leonard Davis and Kyle Kosier. Franklin, a two-time All-Academic Big East Conference selection, started 34 of 35 games in his last three seasons with the Orangemen, where he played under former Syracuse head coach Paul Pasqualoni, the Cowboys' current linebackers coach. Franklin will likely compete for the backup guard spots with Cory Procter, Pat McQuistan, Joe Berger and rookies Doug Free and Steve Rissler.
June 22, 2007
The Cowboys brought back center/guard Matt Tarullo on Friday, claiming the lineman off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts. Tarullo will likely attend his third training camp with the Cowboys, who signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2005. Tarullo spent the 2005 season on the practice squad and parts of last season as well. While the Cowboys re-signed Pro Bowler Andre Gurode to a long-term deal in the off-season, they could use some depth in the middle of the line. Behind Gurode should be quite a competition involving Trey Darilek, Joe Berger, Cory Procter, rookie Steve Rissler and now Tarullo.
June 7, 2007
Second-year lineman Pat McQuistan is expected to compete for a starting job at left guard this season, but for now, he's working with the first-team offense at left tackle, while Pro Bowler Flozell Adams recovers from a knee scope earlier this week. McQuistan, a seventh-round pick from Weber State last season, has played both positions in college. Adams is expected to be ready for the start of training camp next month in San Antonio.
June 4, 2007
Cowboys Pro Bowl left tackle Flozell Adams had successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to clean up some debris that had been causing swelling in the knee. Adams was not seen participating in either of the two organized team activity workouts we were able to watch over the past two weeks because of the swelling in the same knee he suffered a torn ACL during the 2005 season. Such a cleanup surgery is not abnormal for a player coming off a reconstructive surgery. Adams is fully expected to be ready for the start of training camp.
May 13, 2007
This is a big off-season for third-year guard Cory Procter, who has still yet to play a snap of offense in the NFL. But the Cowboys have had high expectations for him since he joined the team late in 2005. During this mini-camp, Procter has also worked at center, backing up Andre Gurode. While he's not ruling out a chance to compete for a starting guard spot, Procter is also hoping he can increase his value with the team by being able to provide quality depth at both guard and center.
May 1, 2007
The last of the Cowboys' exclusive rights free agents signed his tender when guard Cory Procter inked the one-year, $435,000 tender on Tuesday. While Procter has yet to play in a game, the Cowboys like his potential and probably will work him this summer as a backup at right guard and center. He began learning to snap the ball last year. All of the Cowboys' restricted and exclusive rights free agents now have been signed.
April 29, 2007
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he would visit with veteran guard Marco Rivera this week, regarding his status after back surgery. Rivera, 35, underwent his second back surgery in two years earlier this off-season. While he has continued to rehab after surgery this off-season, Rivera's future with the team remains in question.
March 20, 2007
The Cowboys have signed offensive tackle Jim Molinaro. A fifth-round pick out of Notre Dame in 2004, Molinaro spent three years with the Washington Redskins, playing in 15 games. But Molinaro has only played in four games in the last two seasons, including just one in 2006, when he was active for only five games. The Redskins decided not to give Molinaro the minimum restricted free agency tender of $850,000. Molinaro does have experience playing either left or right tackle. The Cowboys return Pro Bowler Flozell Adams on the left side and re-signed Marc Colombo, who started every game at right tackle.
March 9, 2007
The Cowboys finalized a two-year deal with right tackle Marc Colombo on Friday. Colombo, who started all 16 games for the Cowboys last season, received a two-year, $7 million deal that includes a $4 million signing bonus. The signing of Colombo likely means the Cowboys will play Leonard Davis, who signed a seven-year, $49.6 million contract on Monday, at right guard. The Cowboys also locked up Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode to a six-year, $30 million contract.
February 28, 2007
Cowboys offensive tackle Marc Colombo is one of six players who could become unrestricted free agents on Friday, the first day of the free-agent signing period. However, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said on Wednesday the club has contacted Colombo's agent about possibly getting the right tackle a new deal before Friday. Colombo started all 16 games and the playoff game in Seattle last season. The former first-round pick of the Bears in 2002 had his first injury-free season of his career.
February 20, 2007
The Cowboys made sure starting center Andre Gurode never tested the free-agent waters next month by locking him up to a six-year deal Tuesday in the neighborhood of $30 million, including a $10 million signing bonus. Gurode, who started every game for the Cowboys last year, earned a spot on the NFC Pro Bowl roster, which probably didn't hurt his case in the negotiations after the season. Gurode, a second-round draft pick in 2002, has started 39 games at guard and 22 at center, although it's likely the Cowboys have found a place for him in the middle of their offensive line.
February 14, 2007
The Cowboys signed guard/center Trey Darilek on Friday in an attempt to add some depth to the interior of the offensive line. Darilek, a fourth-round pick of the Eagles in 2004, has played 18 games in his three-year career. The former UTEP standout, Darilek spent part of last season with the Dolphins. Darilek worked out for the Cowboys near the end of the regular season. The Cowboys had a Pro Bowl center last season in Andre Gurode, who started all 16 games. Both of the centers on the Cowboys are unrestricted free agents in Gurode, and Al Johnson. The Cowboys might have some injury concerns at guard with Marco Rivera needing his second back surgery in three years.
February 6, 2007
After getting just four players selected initially, the Cowboys are now expected to have seven Pro Bowlers in Saturday's game in Hawaii. Center Andre Gurode was named to the NFC squad on Tuesday after Chicago's Olin Kreutz decided not to play because of an injury. Gurode is one of four players making his first Pro Bowl appearance, along with Tony Romo, Mat McBriar and DeMarcus Ware. Flozell Adams and Jason Witten are going back for the third time, while this will be the fourth straight appearance for safety Roy Williams. Gurode started all 16 games this season at center, after playing mainly guard during his previous four seasons with the Cowboys. He is one of seven unrestricted free agents the Cowboys have heading into the off-season.
February 2, 2007
Cowboys tackle Flozell Adams was named to the NFC Pro Bowl squad Thursday as an injury replacement for the New Orleans Saints' Jammal Brown. This is the third Pro Bowl selection of Adams' career, and third in the last four years. The Cowboys are now set to send six players to Hawaii for the Feb. 11 game at Aloha Stadium.
January 18, 2007
Center Andre Gurode is one of seven unrestricted free agents the Cowboys have this off-season. Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones said last week he would like to re-sign most, if not all, of his free agents or players with large roster bonuses due this off-season. If the Cowboys indeed want to re-sign Gurode, who started all 16 games at center this season, they might want to get a deal done before March 2, the start of the new league year and prevent Gurode from testing the open market. Gurode is one of two starting offensive linemen to become a free agent in March, along with right tackle Marc Colombo.
January 8, 2007
Cowboys guard Marco Rivera underwent an MRI on his back Monday afternoon after suffering an injury in Saturday night's loss to the Seahawks. Rivera's back also locked up on him after the near-four-hour plane ride home to Dallas early Sunday morning. If Rivera needs surgery, it would be his second procedure on his back in two years. Just a week after signing with the Cowboys in the spring of 2005, Rivera suffered a herniated disk that required surgery. Rivera was able to play that season, but admitted he wasn't able to return to normal until the start of the 2006 season. Rivera, an 11-year veteran, started all 16 games at right guard this past season.
January 4, 2007
Bill Parcells said he'll likely keep rookie offensive tackle Pat McQuistan active Saturday for a second consecutive game to continue acclimating him to game situations. Parcells seemingly has some plans for McQuistan next season. The seventh-round draft pick from Weber State was inactive for the first 15 games before palying in Sunday's season finale against the Lions. However, McQuistan played only on special teams, but would likely be the primary backup at both left and right tackle spots.
December 20, 2006
While making the Pro Bowl would've been a real long shot for Cowboys right tackle Marc Colombo, he certainly has turned around his career this season, starting all 14 games and providing arguably the most consistency of any other starting lineman. While Bill Parcells has been pleased, he admitted Wednesday he didn't exactly envision this kind of success from Colombo when he signed the former first-round draft pick late last season. "I can't say that, no," said Parcells, added he reverted back to wisdom that former Raiders coach and current owner Al Davis taught him about evaluating first-round picks who struggle with their first team. "He said, some of these guys that were No. 1 choices - someone at some point in time thought a lot of this player," Parcells said. "So if you have the opportunity sometimes it's wise to explore that possibility knowing those things. (Colombo) was unfortunate he had a very severe problem, injury, restrictive to the point where he couldn't really do all the things that an offensive lineman has to do in the developmental stages."
December 13, 2006
Bill Parcells has been pleased with left tackle Flozell Adams' improved play over the last few weeks, but the Cowboys' starting left tackle will face another premier pass-rusher this Saturday. In five starts, Falcons defensive end John Abraham has 18 tackles, four sacks, four forced fumbles and a pass breakup. "Flo has been doing pretty well, particularly as of late," Parcells said. "But this guy's got more speed than some of these guys we've been playing."
December 3, 2006
Not only did the Cowboys allow just one sack on Sunday, resulting in a two-yard loss in the first quarter, but left tackle Flozell Adams kept Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora in check all day. The Giants Pro Bowler, who made his first start since the Oct. 23 game against the Cowboys because a hip flexor, was not credited with a tackle or a sack all game.
November 21, 2006
The Cowboys made one roster move Tuesday, signing guard Travis Leffew off Green Bay's practice squad. Parcells said Leffew, who played his college ball at Louisville, is a futures type guy, and wants him to get in the weight room as Marc Colombo did last year to better prepare himself for next season.
November 10, 2006
The Cowboys likely will continue using offensive tackle Jason Fabini as a blocking tight end when they want to go heavy in short-yardage or definite running situations. Fabini served in that capacity last Sunday against Washington for the first time. The nine-year veteran has been the team's game-day backup at both tackle spots this season behind right tackle Marc Colombo and left tackle Flozell Adams.
October 30, 2006
Right tackle Marc Colombo had one of his best games of the season Sunday night, battling with Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers for most of the game. Peppers entered the game leading the NFL with eight sacks, but was held without a sack against the Cowboys. Head coach Bill Parcells praised Colombo's effort and said he has played well this season.
October 5, 2006
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said starting right guard Marco Rivera is playing much better this season and attributes that to a full season removed from back surgery he underwent in the spring of 2005. Rivera suffered a herniated disk just a week after he signed in March of that year, an injury that affected him all last season. "I think he's better off than he was last year, and yes I do," said Parcells, who added the entire offensive line has been playing well through the first three games. "Marco is doing fine. I think most of the guys up front are doing well. Marco has been doing fine. He really has."
October 2, 2006
Signed in the off-season to replace Larry Allen at left guard, Kyle Kosier has been solid three games into the season. "I think Kosier is doing very well right now," Parcells said. "I'm very happy with him. He's tough. He does not back down." Parcells said he joked with Kosier about facing Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth before Sunday's game in Nashville. "We were kind of kidding him this week about paying up his insurance stuff for Haynesworth and making sure he had his premiums paid. And we're going to take out some extra insurance on him. He responded pretty well to that. He's doing a good job for us, he really is. He's very competitive and he just gets it done pretty well. It's not always aesthetically pleasing."
October 1, 2006
The Cowboys have only allowed three quarterback sacks, including none in Sunday's win over the Titans. Not only did they keep Drew Bledsoe upright for most of the day, but opened up enough holes for the Cowboys to rush for 217 yards, the most since they put up 222 yards in Washington in 2003 . . . Center Andre Gurode received several stitches to repair multiple lacerations around his left eye following a third quarter injury. While he did not return, the Cowboys are not expecting Gurode's injury to be serious.
September 14, 2006
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells is hopeful Flozell Adams can bounce back with a solid performance Sunday against the Redskins. Adams struggled last Sunday against the Jaguars, despite practicing all week. The veteran tackle missed three preseason games with a strained calf but was cleared to play against the Jaguars. Parcells said he's hoping Adams won't be as rusty this week. "When you only play 25 plays in preseason, which I think was the number he played - it wouldn't be more than 30, I know that - that's not a lot," Parcells said. "I'm hoping he just kind of rounds into shape, really."
September 12, 2006
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said right tackle Marc Colombo, who made his first start since the 2004 season with the Bears, played well considering his long layoff. "Not bad. Not without a little difficulty here and there," Parcells said. "But overall speaking, I was generally pretty happy."
September 8, 2006
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said Friday he expects left tackle Flozell Adams to play Sunday in Jacksonville. Adams has practiced all week, despite missing most of the last three preseason games with a calf strain. Adams suffered the injury on the opening drive against New Orleans on Aug. 21 and missed the next two preseason games.
September 6, 2006
Parcells hasn't officially announced Andre Gurode as his starting center, though it appears nearly certain he will start Sunday in Jacksonville. But he made it clear Wednesday that if Gurode has more problems with mental mistakes, like he did last Thursday night in the preseason game with the Vikings, he won't hesitate to use Al Johnson, a two-year starter who will back up Gurode to start the season. "Now I'm worried a little bit about Andre's focus," Parcells said. "He had a couple of problems against Minnesota, but I'm hoping we can resolve that because we need him in this game against these guys because they're big, strong guys. But if we keep having problems . . . we just can't have that." Gurode has more size than Johnson, which will come into play Sunday against the Jaguars, who pose one of the best defensive-tackle tandems in the league with John Henderson and Marcus Stroud.
September 3, 2006
While cutting Rob Petitti, a 16-game starter in 2005, was the big surprise at this position, obviously head coach Bill Parcells is getting more comfortable with either rookie Pat McQuistan at left tackle, or the possibly of playing Jason Fabini or Marc Colombo as the swing tackle. Parcells has yet to name a starter at right tackle, although Colombo has started three of the four preseason games. While Andre Gurode has remained the starter at center, Al Johnson gives them depth. And remember, Parcells has never been afraid to rotate centers throughout the game.
August 28, 2006
While Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells doesn't have to trim his roster to 53 players until Sept. 3, he ended any speculation on rookie offensive tackle Pat McQuistan in his press conference Monday. When asked Monday if there was any chance McQuistan could wind up on the practice squad, Parcells scoffed. "McQuistan? You kidding me," he said. "They would be like panthers. Don't worry he's staying." McQuistan started Saturday's game against San Francisco with left tackle Flozell Adams (left calf contusion) still banged up. Adams actually suffered the injury in the opening drive against New Orleans on Aug. 21, forcing McQuistan to play with the first-team offense for the entire first half in that game, and then again Saturday against the 49ers.
August 23, 2006
The Cowboys decided not to wait any longer for Stephen Peterman to develop, released the third-year guard on Wednesday. Peterman, a third-round pick from LSU in 2004, only played two games in the last two seasons. After missing all of his rookie year with a torn ACL injury, Peterman returned last year, but was only active for two games, playing only on special teams. Parcells said Peterman's undoing was second-year pro Cory Proctor, who will likely be the swing guard at both left and right guard spots.
August 16, 2006
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said second-year offensive tackle Rob Petitti needs to pick up the pace if he has any hopes of protecting last year's 16-game starting status. "I'm going to have to see more from him than I'm seeing," Parcells said. Petitti began training camp working with the first-team unit at right tackle. But at this point, the competition might be overtaking him. The Cowboys started rehabbed veteran Marc Colombo in Saturday's preseason game against Seattle, and it appears Jason Fabini will get the start Monday night against the Saints with Colombo playing in the second half. In fact, Petitti will be working behind Flozell Adams at left tackle against the Saints. Parcells wants the backup tackle he takes to the game on Sunday to be able to play on the right and left side.
August 15, 2006
Bill Parcells said not to read too much into left tackle Flozell Adams working with the third-team offense during the morning practice. Adams, who is recovering from a torn ACL injury that forced him to miss the final 10 games last season, started last Saturday's game in Seattle, playing the first quarter. "I'm not moving him to third team," Parcells said. "I'm not doing that. His knee is a little sore so I'm trying to give him a few less reps. That's all." The Cowboys worked Rob Petitti at left tackle, opposite Jason Fabini at right tackle with the first-team offense. Parcells said both Fabini and Colombo will probably play a half each next Monday night against the Saints.
July 31, 2006
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said he will be doing plenty of rotating on the offensive line during training camp, and it started Monday at the center position. As expected, Andre Gurode got his turn with the first-team offense, replacing Al Johnson, who was rather ineffective during Sunday's afternoon session. Gurode, a four-year veteran who gives the Cowboys versatility at both center and guard, spent both practices Sunday with the first unit. He is also a stronger option for the Cowboys at center, especially when the team faces a 3-4 defense, featuring a nose tackle on the ball.
July 30, 2006
After spending two days on active Physically Unable to Perform, Cowboys starting left tackle Flozell Adams has been activated and will take part in Sunday's practice. Parcells said Adams worked hard off to the side with the strength and conditioning coaches Saturday, pointing out he ran 86, 50-yard dashes during the two practices he missed.
July 29, 2006
The Cowboys placed left tackle Flozell Adams on the active Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP) following Friday's conditioning run. Adams missed the final 10 games of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Like Larry Allen last year, Parcells might be giving Adams a few days off for conditioning before he puts the pads on.
July 29, 2006
Parcells said Stephen Peterman will move from left to right guard at the beginning of camp, which means second-year veteran Cory Procter will compete with Kosier on the left side. Peterman, who has played in just two games since being drafted in the third round in 2004, will likely back up Marco Rivera on the right side. However, Parcells had both Peterman and Proctor taking some turns at center during the June mini-camp, trying to giving the team some versatility in the backup offensive linemen.
July 28, 2006
The Cowboys released guard Shannon Snell to make their 86-man roster limit by the start of training camp.
July 25, 2006
The Cowboys agreed to terms Monday with seventh-round pick Pat McQuistan, the offensive tackle from Weber State. The club is expected to sign McQuistan (6-6, 314) to a four-year deal worth in the neighborhood of $1.67 million. McQuistan, the 211th overall pick in the draft, will receive a minimum base salary of $275,000 this season, followed by salaries of $360,000, $445,000 and $530,000 in the following three seasons. While he played both guard and tackle in college, McQuistan worked at left tackle in the two mini-camps this summer. In fact, McQuistan worked with the second-team offense near the end of the June mini-camp, backing up two-time Pro Bowler Flozell Adams.

Neither Stephen Peterman nor Cory Procter have gotten on the field for any legitimate regular-season offensive snaps in their short careers, but the two guards already are being asked to diversify. Both are spending the off-season learning to snap the ball for the first times in their careers, the Cowboys coaching staff wanting them to possibly be able to play guard and center. The coaching staff is hopeful they might become proficient enough to take some reps at center once training camp begins.
April 30, 2006
Dallas chose Weber State offensive tackle Pat McQuistan and Texas Tech offensive tackle E.J. Whitley in the seventh round Sunday, hoping to pack depth and developmental prospects into the unresolved tackle position. McQuistan (6-6, 314) and Whitley (6-6, 293) can only hope to follow in the footsteps of Rob Pettiti, the Cowboys' 2005 sixth-rounder who started every game a year ago.
April 24, 2006
The Cowboys have waived offensive tackle Cliff Washburn. After spending the last three seasons bouncing between the Giants' and Bears' practice squads, Washburn signed with Dallas on Jan. 13. While he was never considered a legitimate starting option, Washburn had hoped to earn a roster spot possibly as a backup at the team's cloudy right tackle position.
April 7, 2006
The Cowboys decided not to match the offer sheet Torrin Tucker signed with Tampa Bay, meaning the restricted free agent is now a member of the Buccaneers. Tucker, who signed the two-year tender that included a $100,000 signing bonus, is scheduled to make $1.2 million in base salary this year and another $1.1 million, along with a $200,000 roster bonus if he's on the team in 2007. Since Tucker was not drafted, and the Cowboys only gave him the minimum tender, the club will not receive any draft-pick compensation.
March 18, 2006
The Cowboys signed offensive tackle Jason Fabini to a three-year, $4.5 million contract that includes a $1.75 million bonus and escalators that can push the total package to $7.5 million. Fabini started 114 consecutive games until he tore a chest muscle and missed the end of the 2005 season. He was drafted by Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells when both were with the New York Jets in 1998.
March 17, 2006
The Cowboys released former second-round pick Jacob Rogers following his tumultuous and injury-laden first two seasons in the NFL. After only playing in two games during his rookie season, Rogers elected to have surgery on his knee prior to the start of the 2005 season, placing him on injured reserve. The Cowboys took an $855,000 cap hit following Rogers' release.
March 16, 2006
Along with signing free agent Kyle Kosier, the Cowboys also re-signed vteran Andre Gurode to a one-year deal. Gurode, a four-year veteran, gives the Cowboys versatility at both guard and center. In fact, don't be surprised to see Gurode and Al Johnson compete for the starting center position again during training camp.
March 11, 2006
The Cowboys re-signed guard/center Andre Gurode to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million, including a $500,000 signing bonus. Gurode started two games for the Cowboys last year - both at right guard - but also has extensive experience at center. Gurode entered the 2005 training camp in competition with Al Johnson for the starting job at center and settled into a backup role. His ability to back up several positions will work to his advantage this season.
March 11, 2006
The Cowboys signed veteran guard Kyle Kosier to a five-year, $15 million deal that includes a $5 million signing bonus. Kosier is a versatile lineman, having played every position on the offensive line except center in his career, which includes 11 games at left guard last season for the Detroit Lions. Kosier's future role appears uncertain, but his flexibility along the offensive line will give the Cowboys plenty of options.
February 22, 2006
Although it appeared the Cowboys had completely cut ties with offensive tackle Jacob Rogers, now it seems like he could get another chance. Rogers, who was placed on injured reserve last summer after deciding to undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee, could be headed back to the club and even participate in the team's only summer mini-camp this May. Rogers spent the entire season on the waived/injured list, but never got picked up by another team after clearing waivers. The second-round draft pick in 2003 only played on special teams during his rookie year but was making a push at winning the starting right tackle job in camp, before suffering the knee injury in the preseason opener against Arizona.
January 3, 2006
All has been quiet around Valley Ranch this week, but the Cowboys did sign their seven remaining practice squad players to the active roster on Tuesday. In doing so, the Cowboys have retained the rights to guards Shannon Snell and Matt Tarullo, tight end Tony Curtis and wide receivers Tom Crowder, Jamaica Rector and J.R. Tolver. The Cowboys also signed defensive end Vontrell Jamison off the practice squad last Saturday to fill the open spot left by rookie linebacker Kevin Burnett, who was placed on injured reserve with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. All practice squad players are essentially free agents during the season, but teams can sign street free agents as futures for when the 53-man rosters expand in March to 80.
January 3, 2006
The Cowboys signed offensive guard Matthew Tarullo to a one-year contract after he finished the season on the practice squad. The Cowboys found Tarullo following the 2005 NFL Draft and quickly signed him as an undrafted free agent. The team continues to shop for affordable backup options to veteran guards Larry Allen and Marco Rivera.
January 3, 2006
Undrafted rookie free agent Shannon Snell was signed to a one-year contract for a base salary of $235,000. He was signed by the Cowboys after spending the 2005 season on the practice squad as one of two guards. Snell will be competing with fellow undrafted free agent Matt Tarullo for a spot at guard on this year's roster.
December 22, 2005
Starting right guard Marco Rivera missed portions of practice again Thursday and remains questionable for Saturday's game at Carolina. If Rivera can't play, Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said backup center Andre Gurode would probably start at right guard. Gurode started 13 games at right guard in 2004.
December 21, 2005
Starting right guard Marco Rivera missed portions of Wednesday's practice with a strained neck and is listed as questionable for Saturday's game at Carolina (noon, CST). Rivera injured his neck late in the fourth quarter against the Redskins and spent the night in a Washington, D.C.-area hospital. Test results were negative, and Rivera has said this week he will try to suit up. "I'm not counting him out yet," head coach Bill Parcells said. "Rivera has improved today over what he was yesterday."
December 19, 2005
While the Cowboys had several injuries in Sunday's game, the most serious injury might have occurred to right guard Marco Rivera, who left the game late in the fourth quarter on a stretcher after suffering what was being termed a neck strain. Rivera did not return home with the team, staying overnight with associate trainer Britt Brown at a hospital in the Washington D.C. area . . . If Rivera is unable to play Saturday at Carolina, the Cowboys would likely turn to Andre Gurode, who finished the game Sunday and does have 37 career starts at guard, or first-year player Stephen Peterman.
November 30, 2005
The Cowboys released second-year lineman Ben Noll and signed rookie guard Cory Procter off Detroit's practice squad. Head coach Bill Parcells said he hadn't seen enough progress from Noll, who started one game at right guard last season. Procter (6-4, 295) played both tackle and guard at Division 1-AA Montana.
November 28, 2005
The Cowboys signed seven-year veteran tackle Marcus Price and released Ethan Brooks, who appeared in just one game. Price wasn't in good physical condition when he worked out for the Cowboys on Oct. 18, so the club signed Brooks instead. "I needed to be prepared to do whatever they ask me to do, and the first time I wasn't in the shape that I needed to be," Price said.
November 20, 2005
Center Al Johnson was undersized against mammoth Lions tackles Shaun Rogers and Dan Wilkinson. But Johnson was able to anchor the middle of the line that provided 149 rushing yards. For the second straight game, the Cowboys haven't had a fumbled snap and Bledsoe was only sacked once for a six-yard loss.
November 17, 2005
Andre Gurode has not taken any snaps at center in three of the last four games, but Parcells said he wants to work Gurode back into a rotation with starter Al Johnson. "I need to play him some," Parcells said. "I think he will play some this week. I have confidence in the player. He prepares well every week."
November 8, 2005
Parcells said he thinks the Cowboys have solved their quarterback-center snap exchange problems through some film study during the bye week. Center Al Johnson said he and quarterback Drew Bledsoe have the technical aspect down, but they have to keep their focus on every snap. "We have to make sure that everyone is good, both of us," Johnson said. "We can't forget. We have to keep doing the things we go to do to make sure we get it right."
October 20, 2005
Cowboys head coach Parcells said newly-signed offensive tackle Ethan Brooks has played well in practice the past two days and could be active Sunday. Brooks has started 26 games in his seven-year career and is capable of playing both tackle spots. "I feel good," Brooks said. "It's been seven weeks so I've just got to get my feet doing what my mind wants them to do."
October 12, 2005
For the second consecutive week, rookie right tackle Rob Petitti will be matched up against a Pro Bowl-caliber defensive end. He did a good job protecting Drew Bledsoe from Philadelphia's Jevon Kearse Sunday, but his next challenge is Michael Strahan, who broke the league's single-season sack record (22.5) in 2001. "There's no end in sight for him," head coach Bill Parcells said. "He's got a totally different guy than what he played the last time. But (Torrin) Tucker's played against him, Dan Campbell's played with him, so they can help Petitti out a little bit."
October 10, 2005
Just about every offensive lineman should be rewarded for his play on Sunday, but rookie right tackle Rob Petitti was able to hold off Eagles defensive end Jevon Kearse for most of Sunday's game. Petitti didn't do alone, getting help from tight ends, backs and occasionally receivers, but he and the line kept Bledsoe on his feet for four quarters.
October 3, 2005
The Cowboys have been rotating the centers throughout the first four games, but Andre Gurode played considerably more Sunday against the Raiders, who pose a pair of stout tackles in Ted Washington and Warren Sapp. Al Johnson started his fourth straight game, but Parcells said the Cowboys went to Gurode in the second quarter to add some more size to the middle. "We wanted a little bigger guy on Washington," Parcells said.
September 22, 2005
Andre Gurode has rotated at center with starter Al Johnson since training camp, but head coach Bill Parcells wants him to eliminate the mistakes he made in the first two games. "The entire offensive line is reliant on the center to make the proper calls," Parcells said. "So I'm going to keep trying to work him in there. But if his time does diminish, that will be the reason. Physically, he's doing fine. But we can't afford to have an early snap and couple of mental errors in a short period of play time when everyone else in not making any."
September 21, 2005
Quarterback Drew Bledsoe has struggled taking the snap from centers Al Johnson and Andre Gurode. Bledsoe fumbled in the first quarter against San Diego and lost the ball twice against Washington. "We work on it every day," Parcells said. "I think it's carelessness." Parcells said Bledsoe and both centers have been at fault, but one of Bledsoe's fumbles occurred because the ball was snapped on the wrong count.
September 15, 2005
Of the eight penalties enforced against the Cowboys Sunday, four were committed by the offensive line and two more on the linemen were actually declined. So it's safe to assume the Cowboys will be addressing that area this week. Rookie Rob Petitti, playing his first NFL game, committed two false start penalties, while Larry Allen and Al Johnson were both called for holding. Flozell Adams also had a holding penalty declined, but still gave up a sack on the same play . . . The Cowboys gave up four sacks Sunday against the Chargers. Last year, they allowed 36 sacks (2.25 per game).
September 5, 2005
The Cowboys went with potential over experience on the offensive line, especially at the backup positions. The club released both Tyson Walter, who could possibly play four of the five line positions, and Kurt Vollers, who was the "swing" tackle for both sides. The Cowboys decided to stick with Ben Noll, who will play both guard positions, as will Stephen Peterman. Only Noll has played one regular-season game between the two. While Andre Gurode has guard and will serve as an emergency backup, he will also rotate at center with Al Johnson. . . .The biggest surprise might be the turnaround of Torrin Tucker, who struggled mightily in the first preseason game against the Cardinals. Now Tucker is the only backup tackle, needing to be ready to back up both Flozell Adams on the left side and rookie Rob Petitti on the right.
August 31, 2005
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells wants to take a long look at several bubble players Thursday night against Jacksonville, including guards Tyson Walter and Ben Noll. Parcells said Walter will play some at left tackle and Noll will play the entire second half. Walter and Noll have been rotating at right guard in place of Marco Rivera, who has been nursing a strained hamstring.
August 29, 2005
With the placement of second-year player Jacob Rogers on the reserve/injured list, the Cowboys are looking for rookie Rob Petitti to step into the void at right tackle. Petitti started the game against Houston and played with the first team offense well into the third quarter. Parcells said he was impressed by the rookie not wanting to coming out after he rolled his ankle in the first quarter. But Parcells isn't ready to tab him the starting right tackle. Parcells also said the center tandem of Al Johnson and Andre Gurode played "okay" against the Texans. The two rotated into the game by quarter.
August 18, 2005
Jacob Rogers' sprained right knee initially did not appear that serious, but head coach Bill Parcells said on Thursday the second-year right tackle's injury could end up requiring surgery. Parcells said Rogers, who suffered the injury last Saturday against Arizona, likely will not play Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks. Rogers has yet to practice since the injury occurred. He appeared heading toward securing the starting job after a solid first week of camp, but Parcells said the injuries are keeping him out of the starting mix at this time. Rookie Rob Petitti, who started camp on the left side, has been working with the first team since Rogers' injury.
August 14, 2005
Right tackle Jacob Rogers sprained his right knee in the second quarter of Saturday's 13-11 loss to the Cardinals after spelling starter Rob Petitti for two plays. Rogers did not return to the game. Rogers, who had practiced at first-team right tackle for several days, was demoted to the second team after missing Tuesday's practice to have his surgically-repaired left shoulder examined.
August 10, 2005
Offensive tackle Jacob Rogers returned to practice Wednesday after missing Tuesday's session to have his surgically-repaired left shoulder examined. Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells head coach Bill Parcells appeared annoyed with Rogers' situation at Wednesday's news conference. "I'll have to look at the film. I didn't notice him," Parcells said when asked about Rogers' performance in Wednesday's scrimmage. Rookie Rob Petitti practiced with the first team at right tackle ahead of Rogers.
August 8, 2005
Jacob Rogers seems to be emerging as the front-runner at right tackle. While head coach Bill Parcells would not concede Monday that the starting job is Rogers' to lose, he said it appears to be heading that way. Torrin Tucker's poor performance in last Saturday's scrimmage, in which he allowed four sacks to defensive lineman Thomas Johnson, symbolized his shaky performance this far in camp.
August 1, 2005
Larry Allen, who was placed on the Active/non-football injury list, spent Sunday's practice off to the side again, running and doing more conditioning drills. Parcells said Allen won't retake the conditioning test and will return to the field once the coach deems him physically fit for practice. Until Allen returns, the Cowboys are getting a good look at second-year guard Stephen Peterman, who missed all of last year with a torn ACL. In fact, Peterman worked with the first-team unit during the May mini-camp at right guard, replacing Marco Rivera, who was out after undergoing back surgery.
July 30, 2005
Stephen Peterman lined up at first-team left guard in place of Larry Allen, who has been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list after failing a conditioning test. A third-round pick in 2004, Peterman missed all of last season following reconstructive knee surgery but has impressed Cowboys head coach Parcells throughout the off-season.
July 29, 2005
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said Jacob Rogers, last years second-round pick, will compete with Kurt Vollers and Torrin Tucker for the starting right tackle job. A left tackle in college, Rogers could not get on the field last season while trying to make the transition to right tackle and was eventually moved back to the left side behind Flozell Adams.
May 4, 2005
The Cowboys signed their final restricted free agent on Wednesday, inking offensive tackle Kurt Vollers for one year. Vollers started the final three games of the 2004 season at right tackle, taking over for 13-game starter Torrin Tucker. Vollers, who has started 12 of the 28 games he's played in the NFL at right tackle, will be in the middle of the competition for the currently vacant starting right tackle job.
May 3, 2005
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said the starting spot at right tackle is wide open, with five different players competing for the job, including Torrin Tucker (13) and Kurt Vollers (3) the only two starters from last year. But Parcells said former second-round pick Jacob Rogers will be in the mix, along with converted guard Ben Noll and Rob Petitti, a sixth-round draft pick out of Pittsburgh. Rogers was originally moved back to the left side behind Pro Bowler Flozell Adams, but Parcells said he hasn't closed the door on Rogers competing on the right side.
December 29, 2004
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells wouldn't blame quarterback Vinny Testaverde's five sacks against Washington solely on the offensive line. In fact, he only attributed one sack to the line, two to broken protection by skill players and two to Testaverde himself . . . But Parcells still wants better production from his offensive line, particularly in the running game. Julius Jones was held to just 57 yards on 22 carries against the Redskins.
December 20, 2004
Parcells has not been pleased with Andre Gurode's play, hinting last week that the third-year right guard might be replaced against the Eagles. And after Gurode gave up a sack late in the first quarter, Parcells quickly yanked him in favor of Matt Lehr. But Lehr gave up a sack and was called for holding, prompting Gurode's return later in the second quarter . . . Kurt Vollers replaced Torrin Tucker at right tackle against the Eagles and helped limit defensive end Jevon Kearse to one tackle. Parcells said Vollers likely will start again Sunday against Washington.
December 15, 2004
Head coach Bill Parcells still wants to give second-round pick Jacob Rogers some game experience at right tackle, but Rogers has been bothered by a sore knee after getting kicked in practice last week. Rogers has gotten only limited time on special teams this season. Torrin Tucker, the starter at right tackle, has struggled with consistency in his second season, so naturally Parcells wants to see how Rogers would perform in spot duty.
December 3, 2004
The Cowboys are still unsure whether or not right guard Andre Gurode will play Monday night against the Seahawks, Parcells saying it will likely be a game-time decision. Gurode suffered a bone bruise on his knee in last Thursday's win over Chicago, forcing him out of action in the first quarter. The Cowboys replaced him with third-year pro Tyson Walter, whom Parcells said played "fair" in Gurode's absence. Gurode, however, has practiced both Thursday and Friday, a good sign he could be ready to return to the starting lineup, where he has started all but two games this year . . . If Gurode doesn't play, not only would Walter start, but the Cowboys would likely have to dress Matt Lehr for the first time since Oct. 31 against the Lions. Parcells said the fourth-year guard, who would also back up Al Johnson at center, hasn't exactly played or practiced poorly, but simply said, "I'm just using other people right now."
November 29, 2004
Starting right guard Andre Gurode left with a sprained knee in the first quarter of the Cowboys' 21-7 victory over the Chicago Bears and did not return. Tyson Walter filled in for Gurode, who missed two games earlier in the season with the same injury . . . Left tackle Flozell Adams committed his 12th penalty of the season with a false start against the Bears. Adams had three false starts the previous week against Baltimore.
November 2, 2004
After it appeared the Cowboys would rotate centers for the early part of the season, second-year pro Al Johnson has taken command of the position, starting the last six games. Tyson Walter started the opener but a knee injured sidelined him for the next week, opening the door for Johnson, who has played well as the full-time starter . . . Remember, Johnson missed all of his rookie year in 2003 after undergoing microfracture surgery just two weeks into training camp . . . After a pair of different starting combinations in the first three weeks, the Cowboys are healthy again on the line, starting the same five-player unit for the last four games.
October 11, 2004
The Cowboys' offensive line was back at full strength against the Giants for the first time since preseason. Right guard Andre Gurode returned to the starting lineup against the Giants after missing the last two games with a sprained knee. Matt Lehr filled in for Gurode against the Redskins and Browns . . . Tyson Walter also resumed his rotation at center with Al Johnson, although Johnson started his third straight game there. Walter also sprained his knee in the season opener against Minnesota. He was activated for the Redskins game but did not play.
October 6, 2004
The Cowboys are counting on third-year guard Andre Gurode to return for Sunday's game with the Giants, after missing the last two weeks with a sprained knee. Gurode suffered the injury in Week One against the Vikings, and has returned to full practice this week . . . Fourth-year lineman Matt Lehr has started the last two game in Gurode's absence and will do so again, if Bill Parcells isn't comfortable using Gurode.
September 28, 2004
Right guard Andre Gurode missed his second consecutive game Monday night against Washington (sprained knee). Gurode sat out against Cleveland with the same injury, and had been listed as questionable throughout the week leading up to the Redskins game. Matt Lehr has been starting at right guard in Gurode's place . . . Center Tyson Walter also missed the Cleveland game with a sprained knee but was activated against Washington. Al Johnson has started at center in Walter's absence.
September 17, 2004
With only two days before the Cowboys take the field again, it's starting to look more and more as if both Andre Gurode and Tyson Walter will not be in uniform Sunday against the Browns. Both linemen started last week in Minnesota, but suffered sprained left knees which have not only kept them out of the majority of practices this week, but have them both listed as "questionable" on the injury report. Parcells said Gurode's injury has appeared to be the most serious, and he missed all three days of practice. And Parcells has said on plenty of occasions players who miss practice, won't be playing Sunday.
September 14, 2004
The Cowboys have yet to announce the official diagnosis of knee injuries to guard Andre Gurode and center Tyson Walter, but Bill Parcells did say Monday both injuries don't appear to be as serious as first expected . . . Both players left Sunday's game and did not return. That means Matt Lehr and rookie Ben Noll, recently acquired off waivers from Rams, will both have to be ready for action this week against Cleveland . . . Pro Bowl left tackle Flozell Adams was called for holding twice against Minnesota, while right tackle Torrin Tucker, making just his second start, had a personal foul penalty and three more false starts penalties in the fourth quarter.
September 7, 2004
The Cowboys claimed free agent guard Ben Noll off waivers Monday, giving the team 10 offensive linemen. Noll, an undrafted guard out of Penn, will play right guard and replace injured rookie Stephen Peterman. The Cowboys placed Peterman on injured reserve after he suffered a right ACL and MCL tear in the preseason finale against Kansas City . . . Right tackle is still an uncertain position for the Cowboys, but Torrin Tucker has emerged as the probable starter against Minnesota after starting three preseason games . . . Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said right guard Andre Gurode is more prepared for the regular season now than at this time last year, but he wants the third-year guard to be more aggressive . . . Parcells has said he will rotate centers Al Johnson and Tyson Walter.
August 26, 2004
Kurt Vollers, last year's starter at right tackle for the second half of the season who had been moved to backup left tackle during training camp, is being moved back to right tackle this week to share snaps with Jacob Rogers, while Torrin Tucker goes to the left side behind Pro Bowler Flozell Adams. "That position certainly is one of the muddiest," Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells admitted here Wednesday. "We'll see." The murkiness stems from no one stepping up to claim the starting role, and the Cowboys, at least for Monday's game against the Tennessee Titans, are calling on their contingency plan they've alleged all along. Return Vollers to where he once was. Parcells said he was hesitant to move Rogers around, not wanting to confuse the rookie this close to the season opener. That he volleyed Tucker and Vollers means one of two things: That he thinks Vollers might start at right tackle and needs Tucker to be able to play both sides, or that Rogers is his starter on the right side, and wants to find out which guy, Tucker or Vollers, can best play both sides in a backup role.
August 22, 2004
The Cowboys started Al Johnson at center and rookie Jacob Rogers at right tackle against Oakland. Both players worked with the second-team offense last week in Houston . . . Torrin Tucker replaced Rogers at right tackle late in the second quarter and played a good part of the second half, splitting time with Javiar Collins.
August 16, 2004
The Cowboys released two offensive linemen Monday, including guard Tango McCauley, who didn't play in Saturdays preseason loss to the Texans. It appeared the Cowboys were high on McCauley, a former CFL standout, who received a $100,000 signing bonus this off-season . . . Also, the Cowboys waived rookie free agent Darrick Sanders, an undrafted tackle from Arkansas-Monticello.
August 15, 2004
While second-year pro Al Johnson has worked with the first-team more in training camp, the Cowboys started Tyson Walter at center in Saturday's game against the Texans . . . Walter has proven to be a valuable lineman because of his ability to play center, guard and tackle . . . Johnson will likely start against Oakland next week at center . . . At right tackle, Torrin Tucker started and played the entire first half, while rookie Jacob Rogers played in the second half.
August 2, 2004
The Cowboys have plenty of depth on the line, which is a good thing as two different positions are open for competition. At center, Parcells praised both Al Johnson and Tyson Walter for their play so far in camp. Johnson is trying to recover from a microfracture surgery last year, while Walter has gotten appreciably stronger this off-season. Also, Gennaro DiNapoli, who suffered a stress fracture in his right foot a month ago, could return to the mix as early as next week. At right tackle, second-round pick Jacob Rogers has been getting a good share of snaps with the first-team. But the Cowboys are also taking a strong look at second-year pro Torrin Tucker and fourth-year vet Javiar Collins.
June 16, 2004
The biggest question mark on the line this off-season involved eight-time Pro Bowler Larry Allen, who seemed to be on his way out of Dallas in April. But while the guard entertained minor trade talk, it appears Allen and Parcells have patched up their differences and the Cowboys are expecting him to return for his 11th pro season.
