January 24, 2008 Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is now expected to start the Pro Bowl after Green Bay's Brett Favre has decided not to play, although he was named the starter last month. Favre was replaced by Tampa Bay's Jeff Garcia. Seattle's Matt Hasslebeck will now move into the No. 2 spot. Romo is one of 12 Cowboys selected to the Pro Bowl and is the ninth player to start and fifth on offense.

January 15, 2008 Cowboys quarterback Richard Bartel was one of seven players the club retained from the practice squad on Tuesday. Bartel, a rookie free agent from Tarleton State, was the team's third quarterback, running the scout team in practice this season, behind Tony Romo and Brad Johnson. Just three weeks ago, Bartel had the chance to sign on to Kansas City's active roster for the last game of the season but opted to stay with the Cowboys. Just before the start of the season, Bartel figured to be the odd man out as the Cowboys were expecting to sign rookie Matt Moore to the practice squad. But when Carolina signed Moore to its active roster, it opened the door for Bartel, who stuck around for the entire season.

January 11, 2008 Cowboys QB Tony Romo has had a record-breaking season, surpassing Danny White in several statistical categories this year, including passing yards, completions and TD passes that White set in 1983. However, one thing White didn't accomplish that year was win in the playoffs, with the Cowboys losing to the Rams at home in the NFC wild-card game. White passed for 334 completions for 3,980 yards and 29 touchdowns that season. Romo broke all three club records this year with 335 completions for 4,211 yards and 36 touchdowns.

December 27, 2007 Cowboys quarterback Brad Johnson has been the team's holder all year, but is expected to play some at quarterback Sunday in Washington. Head coach Wade Phillips said Johnson will play, but wasn't sure how long, although Tony Romo is expected to start. Johnson has played at the end of four games this season, but has yet to attempt a pass.

Romo recorded his ninth career 300-yard passing game, placing him third in franchise history behind only Troy Aikman (13) and Danny White (10). Romo upped his club record to six 300-yard passing games this season. The previous mark was three, tied by six different players, including Romo last season.

September 7, 2007 The last time Tony Romo faced the Giants at Texas Stadium, he started the game with a baseball cap on instead of his helmet. That was the game Romo was inserted at halftime to replace Drew Bledsoe. While the Cowboys lost the game, the job went to Romo, who went 6-4 as a starter and led the team to the playoffs. Romo heads into Sunday's season opener with all eyes fixed on him. The Cowboys have just two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. Wade Phillips said behind Romo and backup Brad Johnson, that wide receiver Patrick Crayton would be the team's emergency quarterback.
July 26, 2007 The Cowboys trimmed their roster to 85 players by cutting quarterback Matt Baker between the two practices here Thursday. The club is now down to just four quarterbacks in Tony Romo and Brad Johnson and rookies Richard Bartel and Matt Moore, who will likely compete for the third spot.

The Cowboys quarterback competed in the American Century Celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe over the weekend. Romo finished 11th in the tournament field that included Michael Jordan, Charles Barkely, Kevin Costner, Emmitt Smith and many more big-name celebrities. |
May 22, 2007 Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo seemed excited to hear North Texas will play host to Super Bowl XLV. While he knows that wouldn't be just another game, he is hoping it would be another "home" game. "I've always had this vision of one day playing it at your own stadium, that would be kind of neat," said Romo, while leaving the complex Tuesday after a second day of OTA (Organized Team Activity) practices at Valley Ranch. "You never know how it's going to go. I think it just brings a legitimacy to the area. It just shows the commitment from the owner and the organization to build a stadium and a place like that. It's exciting because that atmosphere around a Super Bowl, I don't think there's much like it. To have it here is just going to be super exciting."

May 15, 2007 The Cowboys must have saw more than a few things they liked from Richard Bartel this weekend, signing the rookie quarterback on Tuesday. The former Tarleton State standout, who started his collegiate career at SMU, attended the Cowboys mini-camp on a tryout basis this past weekend. The Cowboys now have five quarterbacks on the current roster in Tony Romo, Brad Johnson, Matt Baker, Matt Moore and now Bartel.
May 10, 2007 Just two days before the team's first mini-camp practice, the Cowboys released quarterback Brock Berlin, who signed with the team back on April 25. But that was before the Cowboys signed rookie free agent Matt Moore, from Oregon State, after the draft. The Cowboys currently have four quarterbacks on the roster in Tony Romo, Brad Johnson, Matt Baker and Moore. Berlin had spent the previous two training camps with the Dolphins, where he played under Jason Garrett, who served as quarterbacks coach in Miami the last two years. |
April 25, 2007 The Cowboys signed quarterback Brock Berlin to a one-year deal on Wednesday. Berlin is expected to compete with Matt Baker for the third quarterback position, behind starter Tony Romo and veteran backup Brad Johnson. Team owner Jerry Jones said on Monday, however, the Cowboys could draft a QB at some point this weekend. While Berlin has not made an NFL roster the last two years, he did spent two training camps with the Miami Dolphins, playing under then-quarterbacks coach Jason Garrett, who has since been hired as the Cowboys' offensive coordinator. The Cowboys worked out Berlin here at Valley Ranch last month. Berlin, who went undrafted in 2005, played a season in NFL Europe with the Hamburg Sea Devils. After originally starting his collegiate career at Florida, Berlin transferred to the University of Miami, where he started 24 games (19-5 record) and passed for 5,099 yards, 34 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in two seasons for the Hurricanes. Berlin playing briefly in last year's preseason with the Dolphins, completing just 6 of 12 passes for 104 yards and one touchdown before getting released at final cuts.

With his team down eight points in the final three minutes, Romo fired a 47-yard touchdown pass to Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin, followed by another short pass to Carolina receiver Steve Smith for a game-tying two-point conversion. Although the AFC scored as time expired on San Diego kicker Nate Kaeding's 21-yard field goal. Romo was one of seven Cowboys players on the NFC squad, along with Roy Williams, Jason Witten, Andre Gurode, DeMarcus Ware, Flozell Adams and Mat McBriar.

January 3, 2007 Since taking over as the starter in late October, quarterback Tony Romo is 6-4 as a starter, but 4-1 on the road. Now Romo made his first professional start, of any kind, in the preseason opener against Seattle at Qwest Field back on Aug. 12. Romo was rather impressive, playing the entire preseason game and leading the Cowboys to a 13-3 win over the Seahawks. He completed 19-of-25 passes for 235 yards and one touchdown. But his first official start came on the road against the Panthers on Oct. 29, when he led the Cowboys from a fourth-quarter deficit to a 35-14 win in Carolina. Since taking over as the starter in late October, Romo is 6-4 as a starter, but 4-1 on the road.

December 9, 2006 The Cowboys worked out veteran quarterback Tommy Maddox on Friday. Head coach Bill Parcells said this week he is pleased with Drew Bledsoe as a backup, but is probably just exploring all of his options as the Cowboys get ready for the final four games of the season. Maddox has not played this season, but has nine years of experience, most recently in Pittsburgh, where he played five seasons, earning a Super Bowl ring last year. Maddox, a local product who played at nearby Hurst L.D. Bell High School, currently lives in Southlake. |

Romo won the award two weeks ago for a 308-yard passing effort against the Cardinals in Arizona. Romo edged out players such as Shaun Alexander and Drew Brees for this week's award. The Cowboys have now won a weekly award for four of the last week. Punter Mat McBriar and wide receiver Sam Hurd both won Special Teams Player of the Week honors in the last month.

Romo owns the NFL's highest quarterback rating (110.8) and has completed 69.4 percent of his passes with 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. Three of his picks came in the second half of the Cowboys' Oct. 23 loss to the Giants, Bledsoe's final start. Fans can vote on NFL.com until Dec. 12, and the teams will be announced on Dec. 19.

In making just the third start of his career, Romo completed 20 of 29 passes for a career-high 308 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 126.8 passer rating. In the second half, Romo was a perfect 10-for-10 for 144 yards with one touchdown and a 152.1 passer rating.
While the award is obviously the first for Romo, it was the first offensive award for the Cowboys this season. Drew Bledsoe did win the award twice last season and wide receiver Sam Hurd won the Special Teams Player of the Week Award for his performance against Carolina earlier this season.
November 6, 2006 Cowboys starter Tony Romo doesn't officially qualify yet for the NFL stats leaders, but his 93.7 quarterback rating is the fourth-highest in the NFC. Romo is behind only Marc Bulger (102.1), Donovan McNabb (97.3) and Drew Brees (95.2) . . . With 284 passing yards, Romo now has the two highest passing totals of the season for the Cowboys.
October 25, 2006 Tony Romo will become the fifth quarterback to start since head coach Bill Parcells took over in 2003. The Cowboys announced Romo will replace Bledsoe as the starter after relieving the veteran Monday night at halftime. Romo was intercepted three times, but did throw for 227 yards and two touchdowns. The Cowboys are hoping his mobility can offset a struggling offensive line that has allowed 15 sacks in the last three games.
October 15, 2006 Backup quarterback Tony Romo threw his first two passes of his career Sunday, completing both, including a 2-yard touchdown to Terrell Owens. Romo's first pass went to rookie Sam Hurd, who also recorded his first career reception on the 33-yard gain. Romo, a fourth-year pro, has played quarterback in two other games, but only handed the ball off or took a knee to finish a game. Romo's 158.3 quarterback rating is the highest rating possible.
October 8, 2006 Drew Bledsoe had too many plays end with the ball in his hands, getting sacked seven times. However, he did rush the ball five times for 24 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Bledsoe has nine career rushing touchdowns, all occurring in the last seven seasons of his career.
September 21, 2006 Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe bounced back from a three-interception performance in Week One against the Jaguars by throwing for two touchdowns to lead the Cowboys past the Redskins on Sunday night. Bledsoe raised his QB rating from a 45.3 to a 68.0 and could have had it much higher had it not been for about eight dropped passes by his receivers. However, while the Cowboys have a 12-5 record coming off the bye week, Bledsoe's personal mark is not as impressive. The veteran quarterback is just 4-8 in the 12 games he has started following a bye week.
August 31, 2006 The Cowboys have made sure quarterback Tony Romo will be around at least for one more season, giving the fourth-year quarterback a one-year contract extension that will keep him here through the 2007 season.
In all, it's a two-year contract worth $3.9 million, including $2 million to sign. Romo, who has yet to throw a pass in a regular-season game, but Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells has made an effort to get an extensive look at Romo this preseason. Romo started and played the entire preseason opener in Seattle, and has played the second half of both of the last two games.
In three preseason games, Romo has completed 34-of-47 passes for 484 yards and two touchdowns for a quarterback rating of 110.6.
August 25, 2006 Former Cowboys quarterback Drew Henson, officially released on Thursday, cleared the NFL's 24-hour waivers Friday and has become a free agent. Henson can now sign with the team of his choice. The former Michigan quarterback who spent three years playing baseball before getting drafted by the Houston Texans in 2003 (sixth round), will cost the Cowboys nearly $2.9 million in guaranteed money the Cowboys put in his contract after trading a 2005 third-round pick in 2004 to Houston for his services. |
August 24, 2006 One day after head coach Bill Parcells announced quarterback Drew Henson would not be on the Cowboys' roster in 2006, the quarterback was officially released on Thursday.
Henson spent the last three years with the Cowboys, only playing quarterback in two games as a rookie in 2004. Henson started the Thanksgiving Day game against Chicago, but was benched at halftime and never played again for the Cowboys at quarterback.
The Cowboys now have just three quarterbacks on the roster in Drew Bledsoe, Tony Romo and rookie Matt Baker, who has yet to play in the team's first two preseason games.
August 21, 2006 Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe will start Monday night's game against the Saints, making his preseason debut. The veteran did not play last week in Seattle as backup Tony Romo played the entire game. Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said this week he probably will only play Bledsoe and Romo against New Orleans, meaning it's unlikely Drew Henson or rookie Matt Baker will play at quarterback.
August 11, 2006 Bill Parcells is expected to take extended looks at some of his younger players Saturday night, including fourth-year quarterback Tony Romo, who confirmed on Friday he will start the first preseason game. The Cowboys need to make a decision on Romo since he is in the final year of his contract, and want to "play him a lot," according to Parcells. Romo said he is looking forward to starting, which will be his first since meeting Western Illinois his senior year at Eastern Illinois. |
May 15, 2006 Cowboys quarterback Drew Henson did not play in the Rhein Fire's 13-10 loss to Hamburg on Sunday. Henson suffered a sprained knee last week and was listed as questionable heading into the contest. Timmy Chang started for the Fire, who have now lost four of the last five games. After starting the season 4-0, Rhein is now 5-4 and one game behind Frankfurt (6-3) for the second spot for the World Bowl. Only one game remains on the regular-season schedule with the Fire playing Cologne next weekend.
May 1, 2006 Among the undrafted rookie free agents the Cowboys have signed is Jeff Mroz, who quarterbacked Yale for just one full season, but finished tied as the school's second all-time leader in TD passes. Mroz finished his senior year at Yale completing 216-of-364 passes for 2,484 yards and 22 touchdowns - tying the school record for single-season scores. He will take some of the practice load off the team's other arms and compete for a roster or practice squad position in Dallas. |
April 10, 2006 Cowboys quarterback Drew Henson had his best game of NFL Europe so far, leading Rhein to a 31-21 win over Hamburg on Saturday, helping the Fire improve to 4-0, the best record in NFLE. Henson completed 15-of-23 passes for 192 and two touchdowns with no picks, for a quarterback rating of 120.2. Both of Henson's touchdown passes went to former Cowboys wide receiver Zuriel Smith.
March 27, 2006 After struggling in his NFL Europe debut, Drew Henson bounced back with a 104.7 passer rating in the Rhein Fire's 22-0 win over the Berlin Thunder last Saturday. Henson completed 17 of 24 passes (70.8 percent) for 171 yards and a touchdown. Rhein is now 2-0 this season.
March 18, 2006 Cowboys quarterback Drew Henson had a modest debut in NFL Europe Saturday, but did lead his Rhein Fire to a 10-6 win over Frankfurt. Henson completed just 5-of-11 passes for 58 yards. The only score of the game came on a reverse pass from receiver Chris Samp to receiver Juan Wong, formerly of the Dallas Desperados.
February 6, 2006 Cowboys quarterback Drew Henson, one of three players allocated to NFL Europe this season, will play for the Rhein Fire this summer. Henson will report to NFLE training camp in Tampa, Fla. on Feb. 10, getting ready for the 10-game season that begins in early March. Henson, who has only played in two games since signing with the Cowboys before the 2004 season, spent all last season as the inactive third quarterback and did not take a single snap . . . The Cowboys also allocated wide receiver Tom Crowder and cornerback Lenny Williams to the Frankfurt Galaxy.
January 16, 2006 The Cowboys allocated backup quarterback Drew Henson to NFL Europe. After spending the 2005 regular season behind both Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo on the depth chart, Henson will take his newly contrived throwing motion to Europe in an attempt to salvage his career. The Cowboys altered Henson's throwing motion from a three-fourth's delivery to a more over-the-top one following the 2004 season, but he received no significant playing time to justify or decry the move in 2005. |
December 19, 2005 With 29 pass attempts Sunday, Drew Bledsoe moved past Fran Tarkenton into sixth place in NFL history for career pass attempts. He is now only 33 attempts behind Vinny Testeverde (6,519) for fifth place. However, it won't be one of Bledsoe's most memorable games. Aside from getting sacked a season-high seven times, Bledsoe threw three interceptions, although two were off deflections and another was a jump ball at the end of the game.
December 16, 2005 Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe has now added the FedEx Air Player of the Week award to the previously announced NFC Offensive Player of the Week award for his performance against the Kansas City Chiefs, completing 22 of 34 passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns in the Cowboys' 31-28 victory. This is the second time this season Bledsoe has won both awards, the first coming after his season-opening performance against the San Diego Chargers, throwing for 226 yards and three touchdowns in the 28-24 victory. The $5,000 prize goes to Bledsoe's charity of choice, the Children's Medical Center of Dallas.
December 8, 2005 Drew Bledsoe and his counterpart this Sunday, Chiefs quarterback Trent Green, have posted similar passing numbers this season. Bledsoe (86.1 rating) has completed 229 of 374 passes for 2,703 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Green (87.9 rating) has completed 240 of 383 passes for 2,947 yards, 13 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
November 16, 2005 Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe remains first in the NFC with a 96.8 quarterback rating, ahead of St. Louis' Marc Bulger (90.7) and Carolina's Jake Delhomme (90.2). Bledsoe ranks fourth in the NFL, behind Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger, Cincinnati's Carson Palmer and Indianapolis' Peyton Manning . . . Bledsoe does rank third in the NFC in passing yards with 2,215 yards. That has him on pace to throw for 3,917 yards, which would eclipse Danny White's club record of 3,980 yards, set in 1983.
September 20, 2005 Despite a tough loss to the Redskins, Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe still has the highest QB rating in the NFC with a 112.3 mark. Bledsoe ranks second in the league, behind only Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger (153.6). Bledsoe completed just 21-of-36 passes for 261 yards and one touchdown - a 70-yard strike to Terry Glenn. Bledsoe is the only starting quarterback in the NFC without an interception.
September 12, 2005 Quarterback Drew Bledsoe became just the 10th quarterback in NFL history to pass for more than 40,000 yards after his 226-yard performance against the Chargers. Only four players (John Elway, Dan Marino, Brett Favre and Dan Fouts) accomplished that feat in less than Bledsoe's 173 career games. "That's one of those things when I'm old, sitting on the porch with my grandkids and I can tell them how many yards I threw for," Bledsoe said.
August 29, 2005 Although the Cowboys have yet to make an official announcement, it's looking like Tony Romo will backup Drew Bledsoe in the season opener against San Diego. The third-year quarterback was on the field for most of the second half in Saturday night's win over Houston, going 5-for-8 for 63 yards and a touchdown with a 126.6 quarterback rating. "By and large I thought he was okay," Parcells said Monday. Drew Henson was kept on the sidelines, but is expected to play Thursday against Jacksonville.
August 20, 2005 Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells seems to be backing away from his self-imposed deadline of naming a backup after the second preseason game with Monday's game against Seattle right around the corner. "I'll make it when I think it's right to make it," Parcells said. "Let me see what happens here. Give me a chance to take this snapshot here and let me look at this and see what it looks like first. It could alter my opinion." Drew Henson will be second in the QB rotation against Seattle. |
August 16, 2005 The Cowboys welcomed a false alarm here at training camp on Tuesday, as concerns over the discolored bottom of quarterback Drew Bledsoe's right foot turned out to be nothing significant. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed Bledsoe was taken in for X-rays and an MRI Tuesday morning, the club fearing possibly a stress fracture located in the bottom of his right foot. But test results were negative and Bledsoe participated in the afternoon's entire practice without any noticeable problem.
August 2, 2005 b>Tony Romo has worked with the second team ahead of Drew Henson for most of camp. Henson has looked shaky at times in practice.
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said talked to Drew Bledsoe about managing the game this season rather than trying to do too much. Parcells believes the Cowboys' deep group of running backs should take the pressure off Bledsoe. "If the cast is good enough around you, then we may never have to deviate from that," he said.
February 26, 2005 The Cowboys signed Drew Bledsoe to a two-year contract, giving head coach Bill Parcells yet another former player on his roster.
Bledsoe, whom Parcells drafted with the No. 1 overall pick by the Patriots in 1993, was recently cut by the Bills.
Bledsoe, 33, is expected to step right into a starting role, ahead of youngsters Drew Henson and Tony Romo.

December 27, 2004 Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said he will again wait until Wednesday to discuss just how he will approach Sunday night's season finale against the Giants, stating both Tony Romo and Drew Henson could even play in the Meadowlands. However, Parcells also said there is a good chance Vinny Testaverde will start once again, seeing that he is started all but one game this year, and finished all of them. "I'm going to think that over," Parcells said. "We'll see. I don't know yet. Again, I'll just take a look at the Giants, give myself a chance to see what they look like and then we'll decide. But there's a chance (Vinny will start)." |
December 13, 2004 Parcells said Vinny Testaverde likely will start Sunday at Philadelphia, citing that a road game against the NFC East champion Eagles (12-1) wouldn't be an ideal situation for young quarterbacks Drew Henson and Tony Romo . . . Parcells wouldn't rule out allocating Henson and/or Romo to NFL Europe next spring for some extended playing time. A season playing in Europe could benefit Henson, who has started only a handful of games since high school after leaving Michigan for a baseball contract with the New York Yankees following his junior season. |
November 25, 2004 This was supposed to the start of a new era for the Cowboys at the quarterback position. Instead, rookie Drew Henson wasn't allowed to finish his first start, getting pulled at halftime after completing only 4-of-12 passes with an interception returned for a touchdown. But Vinny Testaverde, who didn't practice much this week with a shoulder and back injury, came in to lead the Cowboys to a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, including his 5-yard touchdown pass to fullback Darian Barnes. |
October 27, 2004 Despite the Cowboys 2-4 record, which pushes them four games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NFC East, Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said he won't consider giving backup quarterbacks Drew Henson and Tony Romo some game experience any time soon. Parcells had an opportunity to give Henson or Romo some snaps in the second half of the Cowboys' 41-20 loss to Green Bay, when the outcome had clearly been decided. Parcells opted to stick with starter Vinny Testaverde, who finished 23-of-35 for 308 yards and a touchdown. |
October 15, 2004 Cowboys quarterback Vinny Testaverde has cooled off a bit in the last two games, after starting the season with consecutive 300-yard passing performances. Against the Giants last week, Testaverde he completed just 15-of-24 passes for 126 yards, with both a touchdown and interception. However, with those completions, Testaverde moved past Joe Montana into sixth place on the NFL's all-time completion list. |
October 4, 2004 Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said he'd like to give backup quarterbacks Drew Henson and Tony Romo some game experience, depending on how much "breathing room" the Cowboys have during a game. Parcells also wouldn't rule out using Henson, currently third-string, as the backup in a game over Romo . . . Parcells said Henson and Romo took increased reps in practice last week. Henson completed 14-of-17 passes in a non-padded practice last Thursday, while Romo struggled a little with his accuracy. "He missed a couple throws," Parcells said of Romo. September 14, 2004 Vinny Testaverde had an impressive debut Sunday in Minnesota, throwing for 355 yards, the most passing yards by a quarterback making his first start with the Cowboys. In fact, Testaverde is now tied for seventh on the club's all-time 300-yard games list, with a group of players that includes Quincy Carter, who had just one 300-yard game in his stint with the club . . . After botching a field goal attempt in the second quarter, the Cowboys have switched holders from punter Mat McBriar to backup quarterback Tony Romo, who finished the game holding for the last two extra point attempts. |

August 22, 2004 All three quarterbacks led the Cowboys to long scoring drives, including third quarterback Tony Romo, who wasn't even expected to play against the Raiders. But Romo engineered a 17-play, 59-yard drive which included two fourth-down conversions. Romo also scored the winning touchdown, sneaking in from one yard out with just six seconds to play . . . Vinny Testaverde played the first half and completed 13-of-17 passes for 124 yards, while Drew Henson was 7-of-9 for 53 yards.

August 20, 2004 Head coach Bill Parcells announced during his daily press conference the Cowboys will use rookie quarterback Drew Henson for most of the second half against Oakland, with starter Vinny Testaverde playing most of the first half. It is possible Tony Romo could get some playing time late in the game, but the Cowboys appear to be content with only using two quarterbacks in the game. |

August 17, 2004 The Cowboys used a three-man quarterback rotation in their first preseason game against Houston, but things could change for Saturday's game against Oakland.
"I think what I might do, and don't hold me to this, because I think I might do this," Parcells said. "I think I might kind of make this next game a two-man deal and the third game another two-man deal."
If the Cowboys go with that plan, Vinny Testaverde would start both games, and then alternating the second spot between rookie Drew Henson and second-year quarterback Tony Romo. Parcells is trying to create the best situation for Henson and Romo to develop into the backup role behind Testaverde.
The Cowboys used a similar approach last preseason when they alternated quarterbacks Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson from game-to-game to determine an eventual starter.

August 15, 2004 The much-anticipated debut of rookie Drew Henson went well Saturday in Houston, although the rookie quarterback had his ups and downs. He completed first four passes, but his fifth throw was intercepted by Houston's Anthony Simmons at the goal line, preventing a scoring opportunity. Henson finished the game 8-of-11 for 94 yards . . . Starter Vinny Testaverde didn't get many opportunities in his first game with the Cowboys, completing just 4-of-7 passes for 34 yards and one lost fumble . . . Second-year pro Tony Romo struggled the most, completing just 3-of-11 passes with two interceptions. He also fumbled in the end zone, recovering himself for a Houston safety. |

August 8, 2004 Quarterback Drew Henson was the easiest player to assess during Saturday's stand-up scrimmage. The rookie wasted little time getting the estimated 5,300 people in attendance screaming for the first score of the scrimmage. On his first play under center, Henson threw a perfect deep ball to a streaking Zuriel Smith, who had beaten cornerback Andrew Davison on the play for a 65-yard score. Henson, who worked mostly with the third-team offense , completed 13-of-22 passes for more than 150 yards and two touchdowns, the other scoring strike going to rookie tight end Landon Trusty . . . As for the other quarterbacks, starter Vinny Testaverde worked with the first-team, completing just 6-of-14 passes with one interception (LB Keith O'Neil) and one sack. Second-year quarterback Tony Romo ran with the second-team offense, completing just 10-of-20 passes, including a short touchdown pass to Cedric James. |

August 5, 2004 The Cowboys sent shockwaves not only through training camp here in Oxnard, but all over the NFL by releasing quarterback Quincy Carter Wednesday morning. The team refused to elaborate on the specific reasons for his release, but both Jerry Jones and Bill Parcells were adamant about the decision. The sudden release opens the door for 40-year-old Vinny Testaverde, who has already been named the starting quarterback. For now, Parcells said he plans to keep just three quarterbacks, giving Tony Romo and Drew Henson plenty of practice snaps . . . Carter was not claimed by another NFL team on Thursday and can now sign with any interested team. |
August 1, 2004 Down to four quarterbacks on the roster now, after the release of Chad Hutchinson, the Cowboys are dishing out equal reps to the four players, at least for the first two weeks of camp. While Bill Parcells reiterates there is competition at all positions, last year's starter Quincy Carter said Saturday he considers himself "clearly the starter" and full expects to retain his position this season . . . The Cowboys are dividing the reps to three players each day, letting one of the quarterbacks sit out of team drills. |
June 17, 2004 For the second consecutive year, the Cowboys will enter training camp without a surefire starter at the quarterback position. A year ago, Quincy Carter edged out Chad Hutchinson in a battle that took all of camp to decide.
This year, Carter heads into camp as the starter, but not too far behind is veteran Vinny Testaverde, whom the Cowboys signed as a safety net in early June. |
