ARLINGTON, Texas – One of the Cowboys' most intriguing young talents will be unavailable for Week 2, but another will make his regular season debut against the Giants.
The Cowboys released their weekly list of inactive players on Sunday night, confirming the suspicion that Randy Gregory will be inactive for their division game against New York. Gregory injured his knee and suffered a concussion last week against Carolina and was unavailable to practice much this week.
At the same time, the team announced that rookie tight end Dalton Schultz has been ruled inactive – which means that Rico Gathers will suit up for the first time ever during the regular season.
The full list of inactives is third-string quarterback Mike White, safety Xavier Woods, defensive tackle Datone Jones, center Travis Frederick, guard Xavier Su'a-Filo, Schultz and Gregory.
This will be an intriguing debut for Gathers, to say the least. Intriguing has surrounded the athletic young tight end from the time he was drafted, but it has yet to manifest itself in a regular season appearance. Gathers was on the practice squad for the entirety of his rookie season, and a concussion sidelined him for all of 2017 after a promising training camp.
It's worth noting that his role might be limited in this outing against the Giants. Schultz only played two snaps last week against Carolina, so it will be interesting to see how big of a role Gathers plays in this game.
With Gregory unavailable, the Cowboys may have some shuffling to do at defensive end. DeMarcus Lawrence and Taco Charlton are the likely starters, but rookie Dorance Armstrong is the only other full-time defensive end on the roster. Considering that fact, it's a good bet that utility man Tyrone Crawford will see some snaps on the outside. Crawford has primarily been playing defensive tackle since Gregory returned to the roster, but the Cowboys value his versatility for this very reason.
The rest of the Cowboys' inactives are fairly straightforward. Woods, Jones and Frederick were ruled out on Friday, as all three players continue to recover from injury. Su'a-Filo was just added to the team on Tuesday, so it's no surprise the coaching staff would elect to go with a more experienced option in Adam Redmond for this game. As the third-string quarterback, it's a good bet White will be inactive for every game this season, barring injury.
