2026 NFL Draft Running Back Prospects

One of the bigger stories of the offseason involved the re-signing of Javonte Williams, who is coming off a career year in his first season with Dallas. Williams rushed for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns, easily the best marks of his five-year NFL tenure. That effort earned him a three-year, $24 million contract, one that Williams signed in mid-February to avoid free agency altogether. Williams’ bruising running style gave the Cowboys’ high-powered offense plenty of balance and helped the unit finish second in the league with 391.9 yards per outing. But he also proved to be a willing and productive pass protector in the aerial attack. While Williams figures to be the leader of the pack in the Cowboys’ ground game, behind him is where things get interesting. A trio of youngsters, led by Malik Davis but followed by second-year backs Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah, should make for strong competition at the position. Davis wasn’t even with the Cowboys last offseason but was signed in training camp out of necessity. He ended up rushing for a career-high 250 yards, which included 103 yards against Washington when Williams was banged up. Still, drafting a running back wouldn’t be out of the question, especially in the later rounds to add even more competition to the room. – Nick Eatman
