Mick Shots: First Camp Take

Mick Shots kicks off the training camp podcasts, the guys setting the tone for what will take place here in Oxnard. Then on to Micah Parsons and contract concerns, a react to the camp opening press conference and then the positions of concern Part I, with Part II on Thursday.

The boys do a good job of wrapping things up on the final Mick Shots of the offseason, preparing for the three-day minicamp starting on Tuesday, anticipating the arrivals of Micah Parsons and Travon Diggs, then drift into the cornerback position, a deep dive into Jaiir Elam, Michael Irvin's impression on practice and what to look for at the start of training camp that's six weeks away.

The Cowboys enjoyed a great Alumni Day at Friday's OTA practice, where former players were invited to attend the team meeting, position meetings and watch practice, plus interact with the current players. Well, Everson Walls provides great insight into just what that day was like and giving his impressions of the practice on today's show.

Leading off after Memorial Day, the guys review last week's OTA practices and another round coming up this week, while disputing a ridiculously low ranking given QB Dak Prescott, obviously ignoring the great year he had in 2023. Then Everson's assessment of rookie corner Shavon Revel, a review of the entire cornerback position and sizing up the defensive line.

With the NFL Draft just three days away the guys play a game of "would ya" with the Cowboys No. 12 pick, starting with maybe trading down, to taking a running back, a wide receiver, a cornerback, defensive end and linebacker. And have no qualms about taking a mid-round quarterback.

With the NFL Draft nye upon us, the guys got serious about some position specifics on what the Cowboys could do at No. 12, also analyzing the QB position, wide receivers and cornerbacks as the Cowboys began Phase I of their voluntary offseason program on Monday.

While Bill and Mickey dive into Bill's "Big Green Notebook" dealing with the upcoming draft, they also dive into another book: "Danny White Spotlights and Shadows," the former Cowboys quarterback joining the show to talk about his new book dealing not only with his career but with his family life in a joint effort with his daughter Heather.

A weighty discussion to begin with, then NFL rule proposals, which led to what Stephen Jones had to say from those NFL meetings. Next a deep dive into tales from the UT Pro Day and an analysis of QB Quinn Ewers Pro Day workout and Cowboys top half of the first round draft success.

A fine tribute is given to Cowboys former radio announce Bill Mercer, one of those men for all seasons who passed away at age 99, including a special guest. Then the guys get into the needs at wide receiver and importance of the running game.

The Cowboys sure have been busy this first week of free agency, bringing in 12 new players and re-signing 11 of their own to offset losing six players, including veteran backup QB Cooper Rush. Find out about the best signing and the biggest losses.

The Cowboys began the new league year with a bang in free agency, coming to terms with five players, trading for two more, retaining five of their own significant players but also losing three prominent unrestricted free agents.

With the franchise deadline upon on us, a whole lot of talk on the Cowboys contract options with Osa Odighizuwa, what could happen with RFA KaVontae Turpin, teams with salary cap space and a little combine and draftable running backs, too.

After some Davey O'Brien Award winner Cam Ward talk, the guys jumped into a deep dive on the new coaching staff, with heavy offensive line experience and seemingly an emphasis on running the ball, then transitioning to the opening of the franchise tag period, the hefty tag prices and if the Cowboys have a potential candidate.

Couldn't help from discussing the Dallas Mavericks trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers and the Grammy Awards, but finally got into Brian Schottenheimer's press conference, and the Cowboys putting together a coaching staff, including a couple of running back coach interviews, touching on the Senior Bowl and East-West Shire Bowl, plus tennis, too.

In this pre-press conference show the guys explain why the Cowboys are hiring Brian Schottenheimer as the franchise's 10th head coach, mentioning offensive continuity with Dak and the 25-year veteran NFL coach's ability to command the room.

So much to talk about, from updating the Cowboys head coach search, to the NFL playoff games over the weekend to the CFP championship game. Plus concentrating how the offensive coordinator will affect the decision on the next Cowboys head coach.
